Phlebotomist / HCA / Nursing Assistant

Woodstock Bower Group Practice is looking for a reliable and experienced Healthcare Assistant with strong phlebotomy skills to join our friendly, well-organised team in Rotherham on a flexible sessional basis. This is a varied, patient-facing role at the heart of our clinical team. Managing patient workflow, updating their medical record and working alongside a tight knit clinical team. You'll receive a full induction, training on our systems, and ongoing support from an approachable and experienced team. If you're a confident phlebotomist with a professional, friendly manner and a keen eye for detail, we'd love to hear from you., Your main duties will include venepuncture and blood sample collection, along with the processing and preparation of samples, including centrifugation where trained., Job Title: Healthcare Assistant / Phlebotomist Location: Woodstock Bower Group Practice, Kimberworth, Rotherham Responsible to: Practice Nurse Team / Practice Manager Accountable to: The GP Partners Contract: Flexible sessional working Hours: Sessional, days negotiable, The post holder will work as part of the practice clinical team, providing high-quality, patient-centred support across a range of routine assessments and clinical procedures. The role is primarily focused on venepuncture and clinical measurements, working under the supervision and direction of the GPs and nursing team, and in accordance with practice policies, protocols and procedures., Phlebotomy and Sample Handling

• Perform venepuncture and collect blood samples from patients in line with practice protocols and national guidance
• Ensure correct patient identification, labelling and documentation for all samples
• Process and prepare samples for transport or analysis, including centrifugation where trained and competent
• Maintain accurate records of all samples taken and ensure safe storage and handling at all times
• Follow correct procedures for the management of spillages, sharps and clinical waste
Clinical Measurements and Procedures
• Record vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiratory rate and oxygen saturations
• Measure and record height, weight and body mass index (BMI)
• Perform 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECGs) accurately and to a high standard
• Undertake urinalysis and point-of-care testing as directed
• Act as a chaperone for clinical examinations and procedures when required
• Support the clinical team with other delegated tasks appropriate to training and competence
Documentation and Record Keeping
• Maintain accurate, contemporaneous and legible documentation in patient records
• Record all clinical measurements, procedures and observations promptly and precisely
• Ensure data entry is complete, consistent and of the highest standard of accuracy
• Report any abnormal findings, concerns or incidents to the supervising clinician without delay
Equipment, Stock and Environment
• Carry out routine equipment checks, calibration checks and fridge temperature monitoring as directed
• Maintain adequate stock levels of clinical consumables and report shortages
• Ensure clinical rooms are kept clean, tidy, well-organised and prepared for each session
• Adhere to infection prevention and control policies at all times
Communication The post holder will communicate effectively and courteously with patients, carers and colleagues, recognising the need for tact, empathy and discretion. They will recognise people's need for alternative methods of communication and respond accordingly, and will ensure any patient queries outside their competence are directed to the appropriate member of the team. Confidentiality In the course of their duties, the post holder may have access to confidential information relating to patients, carers, staff and the practice. All such information must be treated as strictly confidential at all times, both during and after employment, in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2018, UK GDPR and practice policy. Any breach of confidentiality may result in disciplinary action. Health and Safety The post holder will comply with the practice Health and Safety policy and associated procedures, including the identification and reporting of hazards, use of personal protective equipment, safe handling of specimens and sharps, and participation in mandatory training. They will take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. You will record vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, temperature and oxygen saturations, and take height, weight and BMI measurements. You will also perform 12-lead ECGs, urinalysis and point-of-care testing. The role involves thorough documentation in patient records, and helping to maintain stock levels, complete equipment checks and keep a clean, safe clinical environment. Excellent attention to detail and high-quality documentation are essential to this role. Experience with SystmOne is desirable but not essential, as full training will be provided., Essential: Previous HCA or equivalent experience in primary care, secondary care or a similar clinical setting; competent and confident phlebotomy skills; experience recording clinical observations; excellent attention to detail and documentation; professional and friendly manner; flexibility to cover sessions at relatively short notice. Desirable: ECG recording experience; SystmOne experience; NVQ Level 2/3 in Health and Social Care or Care Certificate; experience of point-of-care testing.
