Full Job Description
The Phlebotomist in General Practice is responsible for the collection of blood samples from patients for diagnostic testing and other clinical purposes. This role involves interacting with
patients, ensuring their comfort, and adhering to stringent infection control and health & safety standards.
Main duties of the job
Blood collection with skill and precision, following best practices to minimise discomfort and risk for patients.
Prepare and label blood samples according to established protocols.
Utilise appropriate techniques and equipment for sample collection.
Greet and prepare patients for blood collection, explaining the procedure to alleviate anxiety and ensure informed consent.
Provide compassionate and reassuring care to patients, particularly those who may be nervous or apprehensive about the procedure.
Handle any patient concerns or queries regarding the blood draw process professionally.
Ensure proper handling, storage, and transportation of blood samples to maintain their integrity for accurate test results.
Follow protocols for sample labelling and documentation to prevent errors and ensure traceability.
Adhere to infection control guidelines.
Follow health and safety protocols
Maintain accurate records including patient information, sample details, and any adverse events.
Perform and document urinalysis using dipsticks.
Prepare, label and document samples to be sent to the laboratory in accordance with practice policy.
Document and report any issues or complications encountered.
Ensure that phlebotomy equipment and supplies are stocked, maintained, and in good working order.
