Role Overview Culford School is seeking an outstanding and enthusiastic Peripatetic Music Teacher (Singing) to join our thriving Music Department from September 2026. The successful candidate will be an outstanding musician, an effective communicator, and an inspiring teacher, able to teach singing from beginner to post Grade 8 standard across the Prep and Senior Schools. Depending on the interests and skills of the appointee, there may also be opportunities to coach choirs or productions and to take part in school performances. ABRSM exams are hosted at the Senior School on a termly basis, in which pupils have achieved excellent results. Peripatetic Music Teachers are independent, self-employed professionals who are supported by the Director of Music and are integral to the musical life of the school. Teaching Responsibilities
- To teach individual singing lessons to pupils, adapting teaching to meet a wide range of abilities, learning styles and musical interests.
- To inspire pupils and foster a lifelong enjoyment of music and high standards of musicianship.
- To prepare pupils for examinations, assessments, concerts and other performances.
- To monitor, assess and record pupils' progress and provide constructive feedback.
- To timetable lessons appropriately in consultation with the Director of Music and school policies. Departmental Responsibilities:
- To communicate clearly and professionally with parents, pupils and staff regarding pupils' musical progress.
- To meet agreed administrative and reporting deadlines.
- To liaise effectively with the Director of Music and departmental staff.
- To take responsibility for relevant teaching resources and report maintenance or purchasing needs where appropriate. Employment Status:
- Peripatetic Music Teachers are self-employed.
- Peris are responsible for their own timetabling, resources and repertoire with the support of the School.
- Peris invoice parents or guardians directly for lesson fees.
- A charge is payable to the School in exchange for access to, and use of, the School's facilities (the current charge is £5 per pupil per term inclusive of VAT)
- Work undertaken on behalf of the School, including rehearsals, concerts and Music Scholar lessons, is remunerated separately by the School.
- The Director of Music offers ongoing professional support and coordinates the work of the Music Department. Teaching takes place during the school day, with additional rehearsals and events as required.
- Flexibility is required to support concerts and performances, including occasional evenings. Person specification Essential:
- Able to teach singing and develop good vocal health habits from beginner to post-grade-8 standard
- Able to teach and prepare pupils for performances in different musical styles
- Qualified to degree or diploma level in Music
- Suitable prior experience of teaching
- Ability to accompany beginner/intermediate pupils on the piano
- Well-organised and an efficient administrator
- Excellent communicator with pupils, colleagues and parents
- Warm, approachable and encouraging with pupils.
- Registered as self-employed Desirable:
- A teaching qualification
- Successful experience of preparing pupils for grade exams and/or diplomas
- Experience of working in schools
- Experience of performing professionally
