Perinatal Mental Health & Birth Reflections Midwife

This is a key role in developing and maintaining high standards of care for women and their families with Perinatal Mental Health ((PMH) challenges in pregnancy and the postnatal period, the post holder will have a high level of relevant expert knowledge and skills, which will be used to manage, develop and lead care for pregnant and new mothers with mental health needs.

The post holder will be responsible for providing extra support and care to some pregnant women with more severe mental health problems in partnership with other external agencies. The post holder will work closely with women and their families to plan and coordinate their care based on their individual needs. The post holder will provide a link between the maternity service and other services involved in mental health care. The post holder will ensure that relevant pathways, policies and processes for women with, or at risk of, mental illness are developed, implemented and audited. This will involve working with a range of relevant professionals, services and agencies., Provide specialist clinical care alongside Community Midwives, supporting women at risk of perinatal mental illness through assessment, individualised care planning, and referral to appropriate services. Act as an advocate to ensure women receive timely access to specialist mental health care where required. Communicate effectively with women and their families, respecting individual needs, culture, and preferred communication methods, while providing sensitive information about perinatal mental health. Support the implementation of relevant statutory and professional guidelines relating to mental illness.

Provide specialist support for women experiencing substance misuse and co-occurring perinatal mental health difficulties during pregnancy and the postnatal period. Assess mental health, substance use, risk, and safeguarding needs, contributing to integrated, person-centred care plans. Work collaboratively with maternity, safeguarding, social care, substance misuse, and multidisciplinary teams to promote engagement with treatment, recovery, harm reduction, and improved outcomes for women, babies, and families.

Lead the Birth Reflections service, offering women and families a safe, supportive environment to explore their birth experience, identify unmet emotional needs, facilitate referrals where appropriate, and use service user feedback to support quality improvement and enhance maternity care.
