Full Job Description

The starting salary for this role is £26,777 per annum for working 36 hours per week. As you progress through your professional qualification your salary will increase up to £34,654 per annum. Do you enjoy working outdoors in a physically active role? The main focus of an Asset Survey Technician involves taking core samples from the road for either compliance or investigative purposes. Although the role involves other condition surveys, the emphasis of the position is core sampling. This is an exciting opportunity to start a career path as an Asset Survey Technician within the highways sector where personal and professional development is provided with no previous experience required. This is a Professional Development Programme position in Environment, Transport and Infrastructure (ETI). The position provides a formal career development opportunity supported by a comprehensive training and development offer which will involve undertaking a professional qualification in Civil Engineering. The role is based at the Surrey County Council Merrow Complex, Guildford. The role involves carrying condition and performance surveys on Surreys highway network so will be predominately site-based., The Asset Survey Team sits within the Asset Planning Team and is responsible for carrying out a range of condition and performance surveys for compliance and investigative purposes. This provides appropriate data to assist with the practical application and management of Asset Planning in Surrey by enabling informed decision making, prioritisation and sufficient project and programme progression within the Network and Asset Management Group. As an Asset Survey Technician, you will occupy an essential role coring, surveying, and inspecting various asset types to deliver quality condition data and inventory information to improve the decision making across the directorate. This role will predominantly involve working outside, and at times will be required to work unsocial hours when needed and due to the necessity for site visits, it is essential that a full UK manual driving licence is held due to the nature of the job. If you are unable to drive for any reason, we welcome a discussion in how you intend to meet the requirement for travel. Some of the tasks you will undertake as part of this role includes:

  • Undertake a program of NRSWA compliance coring annually
  • Undertake investigatory coring works for the SCC major maintenance program annually
  • Carry out compliance coring on VCO's upon request
  • Undertake external coring requests
  • Assisting with any other condition and performance surveys when needed, Surrey County Council is preparing for Local Government Reorganisation which will allow us to implement the Government led policy of devolution, which is all about giving more powers to local areas.
  • Currently, Surrey has a two-tier council system, with 11 district and borough councils and a county council, all responsible for different services. All these councils will be reorganised into a smaller number of new unitary councils which will come into effect in April 2027.   • A minimum of 5 GCSE's
  • Good standards of communication skills
  • Flexibility to work unsocial hours when required

  • Surrey has both urban and rural areas therefore you will be expected to have a valid driving licence to drive in the UK and be willing to travel across a wide geographical area.
