Full Job Description
This post offers an exciting opportunity for individuals from a Paediatric or Emergency Medicine background to develop their Paediatric Emergency Medicine skills, experience and knowledge through working in our busy Paediatric Emergency Department which has around 50,000 attendances per year.
The post holder will work on a dedicated Paediatric ED rota and will gain experience and training in managing medically unwell children as well as injured children; the department is a busy Trauma Unit and part of the North East London Trauma Network. The successful applicant will be supported by a team of 4 Paediatric Emergency Medicine consultants and seventeen adult Emergency Medicine consultants, and will work alongside MDT colleagues including paediatric ENPs and resident doctors from paediatric and adult EM backgrounds.
CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide direct clinical care to children presenting to the emergency
department, ensuringtimely assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.
Contribute to the resuscitation and acute stabilisation of critically ill
children.
Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with
multidisciplinary colleagues to ensurehigh quality care for all
children in the Paediatric Emergency Department
Adhere to best practice guidelines in management of paediatric
illness and injury
Engage in education opportunities
RESPONSIBILITY FOR PATIENTS
Provide and maintain a high standard of patient care for all children
attending the PED
Maintain up to date training including Advanced Paediatric
LifeSupport qualifications
Follow local and national guidance for the management of paediatric
illness and injury know when to refer for specialist management
Ensure safe discharge from the Emergency department by providing
appropriate written and verbal safety netting information
RESPONSIBILITY FOR POLICY AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENT
Contribute to the development of departmental paediatric
emergency medicine policiesand guidelines.
Contribute to quality improvement projects within the PED
Contribute to initiatives to improve paediatric healthcare access and
outcomes
Contribute to departmental audits and clinical governance activities
The Emergency Department at the North Middlesex University Hospital has an annual attendance of ~ 180,000 new patients. 27% of attendances are under the age of 16. The post holder will be required to play an active role in the development of our Paediatric emergency services.
There is a significant trauma workload; consequently there is an active Trauma Team. The department receives nearly 20% of its workload as ambulance borne. The department has a philosophy of comprehensive patient care where the initial management of the patient is undertaken in the ED and the patient then handed over to in-patient teams. There is an excellent relationship with the in-patient teams with seamless referrals. The case mix has the highest acuity in the North East Thames region with preponderance towards medically unwell patients.
