Paediatric Lead Diabetes Specialist Nurse

Lead the Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nursing Team and work collaboratively as a key member of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care for children and young people with diabetes.

Provide specialist clinical care, education, and support to children, young people, and their families across home, school, community, and hospital settings. Facilitate understanding of a diabetes diagnosis, treatment options, and the long-term management of this lifelong condition, including the safe and effective use of diabetes technologies such as insulin pump therapy, Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM), and flash glucose monitoring systems.

Lead, develop, and coordinate individualised education programmes for children, young people, families, carers, school staff, and healthcare professionals, ensuring learning is tailored to meet identified needs. Promote self-management by enabling children, young people, and their families to develop the knowledge, confidence, skills, and resilience necessary to effectively manage their diabetes, supported by the wider healthcare team.

Provide clinical leadership within the diabetes service, contributing to service development, quality improvement initiatives, and the achievement of local and national standards of care to improve outcomes and experience for children and young people living with diabetes., 1. To build professional caring relationships with children, young people with diabetes and their families and carers and be able to communicate effectively and empathetically with children and young people with diabetes and their families always taking into consideration their chronological and developmental age and cognitive ability.
2. To support, mentor and supervise student and ward nurses, medical students and members of the multi-disciplinary team as appropriate.
3. To support and enable children and families/carers to make informed decisions relating to their treatment and management.
4. Utilise all local and national information and ICT systems to secure accurate and timely resource data.
5. Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute to achievement of corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times, including all aspects of child protection.

Responsible for providing expert clinical care, education, support, and leadership for children and young people (CYP) with diabetes and their families. The role combines direct patient care, multidisciplinary working, service development, and safeguarding responsibilities.
