Full Job Description
We are looking for a kind, patient and reliable Personal Assistant / Support Worker to join a small team supporting a funny, creative and engaging 21-year-old man who has Fragile X Syndrome, ASD, learning difficulties and anxiety.
He enjoys music, performing, animals and technology, and he is looking to be supported by someone who shares or is interested in these areas and can engage with him at his pace.
He has recently left full-time education and is beginning an important new stage of adult life. He currently volunteers at a weekly karaoke coffee morning in Gloucester and would like to build more meaningful daytime opportunities, including community activities, volunteering or work-experience opportunities linked to his interests.
He thrives on routine, familiarity and clear communication. New situations, uncertainty and unexpected changes can cause significant anxiety, so he benefits from calm, reassuring support from people who can help him feel safe, understood and confident.
About the Role
- Provide calm, steady and consistent support.
- Use clear, reassuring communication to help him manage anxiety.
- Support him to build confidence in the community and in new environments.
- Support him with work-experience, volunteering or other meaningful daytime routines.
- Help him explore opportunities connected to music, performance, animals, technology and other interests and join him in activities he enjoys (maybe introduce him to some new ones too!)
Warm, patient and able to stay calm under pressure.
- Reliable, consistent and trustworthy, with good timekeeping.
- Able to build trust and support him in a way that feels safe and predictable.
- Happy to adapt to his pace, interests and comfort levels.
- Able to recognise signs of anxiety and respond in a calm, low-key and reassuring way.
- Comfortable supporting someone who may need extra processing time, reassurance and clear expectations.
- Able to follow agreed guidance while also using initiative appropriately.
- A good communicator who can work with family members, other PAs and professionals when needed.
- Experience of ASD, Fragile X Syndrome, learning disabilities, neurodivergence or anxiety-related behaviours would be helpful, but willingness to learn and the ability to build trust are just as important.
This role may particularly suit someone with a background or interest in performing arts, music, youth work, special education, community support, care, animal welfare, mentoring or confidence-building activities., Respectful of the employer's privacy and confidentiality
- Reliable with good timekeeping
- Able to both follow instructions and work on own initiative
- Hygienic, tidy and well organised
- Fit and healthy to undertake the required duties
- Patient and possess excellent interpersonal skills
- Honest and cheerful
- Creative
- Able to speak and read English to a reasonable standard
- Must be comfortable with pets
- Able to always work to high standards of health & safety
- 1 dog in property
- Interest in music, live music and animals would be a bonus.
Additional requirements
Non-smoker preferred or someone willing to refrain from smoking during working hours
