Ophthalmology Fellow in Emergency Eye Care

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Ophthalmology Fellow to join the Emergency Eye Care service at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust on a fixed-term basis. This is an excellent opportunity to gain high-volume, hands-on experience in the assessment and management of acute ophthalmic conditions within a busy and well-supported service. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering Urgent Eye Care services across the Trust, working within a multidisciplinary team to provide timely, safe, and patient-centred care. The post offers a varied and rewarding experience, including Eye Casualty clinics, acute ophthalmology, and opportunities to support service development and pathway improvement. Our Ophthalmology Department is a large and forward-thinking service delivering care across multiple sites including the Royal Berkshire Hospital and Prince Charles Eye Unit. The department is well equipped with modern facilities and supports a high volume of patients, offering an ideal environment for clinical exposure, learning, and professional development. This post is particularly suited to a doctor with an interest in acute ophthalmology and emergency eye care who is looking to develop their clinical confidence, decision-making skills, and experience within a dynamic NHS ophthalmology service., The postholder will support delivery of Urgent Eye Care services, primarily within Eye Casualty, assessing and managing a range of acute ophthalmic conditions. They will contribute to patient flow, working collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, timely care. The role includes participation in service improvement, clinical governance, and maintaining accurate clinical documentation in line with Trust standards., The appointee would be required to undertake annual appraisal and contribute towards their professional development plan. The exact details of the job plan will be agreed on appointment and will depend upon the area of expertise of the successful applicant and requirements of the department.

• 5 years experience at specialist registrar level or equivalent, Experience of YAG laser peripheral iridotomies, and Selective or Argon Laser Trabeculoplasties
  
  The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest District General Hospitals in the country. The hospital achieved Foundation Trust status on 1st June 2006. The Ophthalmic service has a successful track record of delivering high quality acute medical and surgical services for over 1,000,000 patients across Berkshire. The Trust is Reading's biggest employer and may form the central hospital for one of the country's new medical schools.
The Ophthalmology department undertakes approximately 7000 day-case procedures per annum and provides approximately 100,000 outpatient attendances and over 20,000 Eye Casualty attendances per annum, serving a population of approximately 1 million. At the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading the service is located in the Eye Block and includes the Eye Outpatient Department and the dedicated Eye Day Case Unit. Inpatient care is provided on Dorrell Ward which provides care for Head and Neck patients. There are dedicated eye theatres. The Prince Charles Eye Unit in Windsor is on the site of the King Edward VII Hospital. There are two fully commissioned ophthalmic theatres within the unit undertaking day case admissions and minor operations.
