Ophthalmic Technician

Outpatients Clinic supports the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred eye care as part of Barts Health NHS Trust. The clinic provides expertise in clinical care, research, and education, and the post holder contributes to maintaining these standards through effective clinical and operational support. The role involves performing a range of diagnostic tests, including visual acuity testing, visual field assessment, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), and vital signs monitoring. The Ophthalmic Technician also assists clinicians and nursing staff during patient assessments and treatments, helping to ensure the smooth and efficient flow of patients through clinic pathways. A key part of the role includes the accurate collection, recording, and management of clinical data, as well as the maintenance and preparation of ophthalmic equipment. The post holder is also responsible for supporting a safe, clean, and well-organised clinical environment that promotes high standards of patient care. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Ophthalmic Technician plays an important role in enhancing patient experience, supporting timely diagnosis and treatment, and contributing to the overall efficiency and quality of ophthalmology services. Main duties of the job Perform diagnostic eye tests such as visual acuity, visual fields, OCT scans, and vital signs monitoring Assist clinicians and nursing staff during patient examinations and treatments Ensure smooth patient flow through clinic pathways Accurately collect, record, and manage clinical data Prepare, maintain, and check ophthalmic equipment Maintain a clean, safe, and organised clinical environment Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to support efficient, high-quality patient care Help improve patient experience and support timely diagnosis and treatment

• "O" level/GCSE Education or equivalent
Desirable
• BSc (Hons) in Optometry
Experience Essential
• Communicating effectively both verbally and in written English.
• Working in an Ophthalmic Health Care setting as an Ophthalmic Technician, supporting patients and the multi- disciplinary team with a range of Ophthalmic technical skills including; Snellen, Fields, OCT, Widefield, administering drops.
• Working as part of a Team
• Following instructions and completing assigned tasks.
Knowledge Essential
• Evidence of planning to undertake future educational or training programmes.
Desirable
• Understanding of the needs of patients with eye -related needs.
Skills Essential
• Able to prioritise own workload and that of others as appropriate.
