Full Job Description

The fellowship is under the direction of Prof Saul Rajak, Mr Huw Oliphant and Miss Valerie Juniat. The oculoplastics fellow can expect to receive comprehensive training in eyelid, lacrimal (endoscopic and external) and orbital surgery, as the department has a high throughput of routine and complex eyelid, lacrimal and orbital cases and a regional referral centre for these subspecialties. The clinical duties of the post include the following: 3-4 theatre sessions (2-3 consultant led, 1 independent and once monthly joint ENT endoscopic lacrimal and orbital list) 3 oculoplastic clinics 1 eye casualty 1 departmental teaching session 1-2 supporting professional activity sessions On Call Commitment: 1:8 The on-call doctor works in Eye Casualty on Friday afternoon, all doctors attending teaching assist in Eye Casualty before and after teaching There will also be the opportunity to obtain exposure to paediatric oculoplastics, joint neurosurgery and head and neck cases. The fellow will also be
expected to be a part of the rota for teaching medical students. The oculoplastic service has a strong focus on research and development in this subspeciality and accordingly there will be opportunity to develop, contribute to or continue research studies in oculoplastics as well as a weekly consultant teaching session (Friday 8am 9am). The Sussex Eye Hospital is a part of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust and has a complement of 13 substantive Consultant Ophthalmologists, and has bases on both the Royal Sussex County Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital sites. The post holder accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior. While it has been agreed between the professions that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this
sub-section are exceptions and you should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis. The post holder accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior. While it has been agreed between the professions that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptions and you should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis. Teaching Every week there is a regional all day Friday afternoon session that takes place at Brighton. This consists of clinical grand rounds, visiting speakers, local speakers, and audit and clinical governance sessions. Additionally there is weekly consultant led oculoplastic fellowship teaching (Friday,
8am-9am)
