Full Job Description

Nuffield Professor of Surgery

The Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences and Balliol College invite applications for the Nuffield Professorship of Surgery. This academic position comes at an important point in the Department's development, following a sustained period of growth and diversification.

The Department is a broad and multidisciplinary environment, where surgery and clinically informed research remain central. Over the last decade, the impact of this work has been increasingly driven by the adoption of engineering science, data science, advanced diagnostics, molecular profiling, and novel approaches to treatment within the department's research portfolio. This portfolio now spans the full translational spectrum from fundamental discovery to clinical application.

Based on this multi-disciplinary research environment, we welcome applications from both senior clinical academics and non-clinical researchers of international standing for the Nuffield Professorship of Surgery/Surgical Sciences. Applicants must demonstrate a clear ability to situate their research within a surgical and clinical research environment and to effectively engage with surgical and clinical colleagues. The precise balance of responsibilities, including any clinical commitments and external activity such as the development of spin-out companies, innovation, and consultancy work, alongside departmental leadership roles, will be agreed in light of the background and experience of the postholder.

As a statutory professor, the postholder will be expected to provide academic leadership within the Department and the wider University, contributing to research strategy, mentorship, and the development of a supportive and inclusive research culture. They will be an active principal investigator, leading and sustaining an externally funded research programme that complements and strengthens the Department's strategic priorities.

The postholder will be a Fellow of Balliol College, playing an active role in the Governing Body, and as a member of the wider college community supporting college activities.

The Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences and Balliol College embrace diversity and inclusion in their recruitment campaigns and would welcome applications from candidates currently underrepresented in senior roles in the University, particularly women, ethnic minority groups, and those with diverse backgrounds that are underrepresented in academic posts in Oxford. The University of Oxford actively promotes and supports flexible working across sites.

Please submit applications through the WittKieffer Candidate Portal here.
