South Staffs Water is committed to delivering clean, safe, reliable water to our customers and you can play a key part in making that happen. We're looking for a proactive and safety-focused Network Assistant to support the operation and maintenance of our clean water distribution network. This is a hands-on role where no two days are the same. You'll help maintain water quality, support network performance, and ensure our assets are operating safely and efficiently., As a Network Assistant at South Staffs Water, you will play a vital role in supporting the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of our clean water distribution network. Working across our regions in a hands-on, field-based capacity, you'll carry out structured flushing, water quality monitoring, and asset inspections to help maintain high water quality standards and regulatory compliance. This role is essential to ensuring our customers receive clean, clear, great-tasting water every day, while contributing to the overall performance and resilience of the network. Responsibilities include:
- Carry out structured flushing of clean water mains within District Metered Areas (DMAs)
- Operate valves and hydrants safely to maintain water quality
- Assist in identifying discolouration risks and implementing corrective actions
- Provide accurate information to customers when required
- Support other operational activities as needed
- Work in full compliance with Health & Safety policies and procedures
- Follow NRSWA requirements when working on or near highways
- Adhere to risk assessments, method statements, and safe systems of work
- Promote a strong safety culture, especially during lone working
- Capture and record water quality data (e.g., turbidity, chlorine)
- Ensure accurate and timely data entry into asset management systems
- Report anomalies or potential water quality issues promptly
- Conduct routine inspections including:
- Trunk main walks
- Air valve inspections
- Valve operations and condition checks
- Support fault identification, escalation, and network investigations
- Assist with leakage detection activities
- Monitor network performance indicators, particularly turbidity (NTU)
- Support proactive interventions to maintain compliance and performance
- Work independently when required, managing workload and safety
- Collaborate with Network & Supply, Water Quality, and operational teams
- Maintain clear communication with supervisors and colleagues
- Participate in occasional evening, weekend, or emergency response work (additional pay applies)
Experience in field-based or operational roles (utilities, construction, or similar) - Awareness of water distribution networks (desirable)
- Understanding of water quality principles (desirable)
- Ability to work safely in public highway environments
- Strong attention to detail and accurate data recording
- Problem-solving mindset with the ability to identify and escalate issues
- Clear communication skills
- Self-motivation and the ability to work independently
- Team-oriented approach Qualifications
- Full clean UK driving licence (essential)
- NRSWA accreditation
- Water Hygiene / EUSR registration
- Health & Safety training (manual handling, First Aid)
