Full Job Description
We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic person to take up a newly created role of Collections Assistant within the Collections and Conservation team. You should have experience of, and a passion for, working with museum objects, collections and the people who use our service. You will assist in the care and management procedures and processes of museum collections, including their documentation, integrated pest management, environmental monitoring, storage improvements and movement and location control. This will ensure their preservation for the future and to make them accessible to as wide an audience as possible through a variety of means. You will help support and develop accessibility of the collections, focussing on care and management whilst promoting the use of the collections to as wide an audience as possible, this would include assisting with the digitisation of objects to support the electronic catalogue, public enquiries and social media. You will support the safety and security of collections including emergency planning and salvage response, safe storage and object handling, exhibition and display installation. All of this work is to ensure that the Museum Service is able to meet the standards expected of an Arts Council England Accredited Museum. You will work alongside colleagues in the Collections and Conservation team, the Museum Curatorial team and our volunteers. We expect you to play a supportive role in the operation of the Museum service and the wider Culture Leicestershire services in order for us to deliver our vision of a vital, engaging and responsive heritage offer to the public. - Have Maths and English GCSE and Level 3 qualification (2 A levels/ BTEC extended diploma/ NVQ 3)
- Proven knowledge and experience of working or volunteering with museum collections.
- Experience of museum collections care and management processes including handling, packing and moving objects.
- Knowledge of digital and social media and its applications for museum collections
- Cataloguing or documentation skills relevant to museum processes including working with electronic databases
- Be able to demonstrate attention to detail, manage your own time to achieve agreed objectives and work well within a team.
- Have a high level of interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
