Medical Director - Secondary Care & Transformation

As part of the restructure of the North East & Yorkshire Regional Office of NHS England, a small number of new, senior clinical roles have been created in the Medical Directorate. These new roles reflect the changing responsibilities and accountabilities of NHS England Regions as set out in the national blueprint. Reporting to the Regional Medical Director, the new Medical Director - Secondary Care & Transformation will play a vital role in supporting the maintenance and improvement of operational quality and performance and driving innovation and transformation across secondary care in the North East & Yorkshire. The successful candidate will work closely with secondary care providers and the four Integrated Care Systems across the North East & Yorkshire and as part of a multidisciplinary team approach within the NHS England Regional Team supporting the oversight and transformation of the secondary care sector. This will include supporting the delivery of the national Modern Service Frameworks and other clinical improvement programmes within the North East & Yorkshire. NHS England has a wide range of statutory functions, responsibilities and regulatory powers. These are focused on supporting the wider NHS to deliver high quality care, as well as doing those things that are best done once for the whole NHS. Our staff bring expertise across clinical, operational, commissioning, technology, data science, cyber security, software engineering, education, and commercial specialisms - enabling us to design and deliver high-quality NHS services. In March 2025,the Government announcedthat NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care will increasingly merge functions, ultimately leading to NHS England being fully integrated into the department. If you currently work within the NHS and if successful at interview, we will initiate an Inter Authority Transfer (IAT) via the Electronic Staff Record (ESR). This retrieves key data from your current or previous NHS employer to support onboarding, including competency status, Continuous Service Dates (CSD), and annual leave entitlement. You may opt out at any stage of the process. Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in our offices. This role we carry out the following responsibilities:

• Providing system leadership and clinical improvement advice to support local healthcare system resilience with a focus on positive outcomes and overall quality and safety of patient care
• Supporting the Regional Medical Director & and Chief Nurse to deliver regional surveillance and quality assurance of NHS healthcare providers and the independent sector
• With the Regional Medical Director, determining clinical support for providers in or at risk of enhanced oversight and to ensure that providers receive the necessary support to improve quality
• Providing professional and clinical leadership, including addressing organisational clinical performance issues and issues relating to wider system working.
• Leading and developing transformational programmes across systems and providers
