Full Job Description
As our new Marketing Manager, you will be responsible for developing and delivering marketing strategies that drive journal content growth across an assigned portfolio of titles. Working closely with the Senior Marketing Manager, you will design and implement targeted campaigns to build awareness in priority markets, attract high-quality authors, and support author acquisition, retention, and advocacy. You will manage budgets and lead campaigns aligned to journal development objectives, while also contributing to the optimisation of existing marketing programmes and operational processes. You will partner with publishers and journal editors to identify key subject areas and opportunities, particularly through Calls for Papers, to increase manuscript submissions and researcher engagement. Using journal usage data, submission trends, and discipline-level market insights, you will monitor performance and adapt marketing approaches to deliver against title-level targets. As the subject matter expert for your portfolio, you will work collaboratively across marketing teams, including institutional marketing and operations, to ensure consistent messaging, effective channel selection, and informed use of the marketing technology stack. You will ensure that internal and external stakeholders understand journal marketing plans and how activity supports agreed priorities, representing marketing strategy clearly in relevant forums. The role also includes line management of a marketing executive, with responsibility for setting priorities, developing capability, and embedding a culture of continuous improvement through KPI analysis and insight. Success will be demonstrated through timely, high-performing campaigns, positive impact on manuscript submissions, strong stakeholder confidence, and a collaborative, adaptable, and data-driven approach to achieving shared goals.
- Manage expectations and satisfaction of internal and external stakeholders (societies, editors), discerning appropriate communication and service depending on priority.
- Ability to think strategically about products and markets and demonstrate proficiency in digital marketing.
- Ability to develop, implement, and improve marketing strategies, using all available analytics to make informed decisions and to improve outcomes.
- Ability to demonstrate excellent communication skills, expectation management, and ability to influence internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders in diverse locations and functions.
- Significant experience in journals marketing and understanding of the scholarly publishing environment, specifically academic authors.
- Manage multiple campaigns and deadlines, prioritizing based on business goals and data, and remaining resilient under pressure and changing environments.
We are the world's largest university press. That means we serve the academic community as no other publisher can. We work in partnership with institutions and learned societies to bring a world of knowledge to the fingertips of students and researchers worldwide. The goal is impact. Together with our academic communities, we curate and seamlessly connect together the ideas that push their fields forward, so they can learn from them, add to them, and continue a virtuous cycle of scholarship. And because we are a part of the academic community and guided in everything we do by our mission, we re-invest in our people, our publishing, and the world-leading research institution of which we are part.
We care about work/life balance here at OUP. With this in mind we offer 25 days' holiday that rises with service, plus bank holidays and Christmas closure (3-days) and a 35-hour working week. We are open to discussing flexibility in respect to working patterns, dependent on role. We also have a great variety of active employee networks and societies. We help make your money go further by contributing to your pension up to 12%, offering loans and savings schemes through our partnership with Salary Finance, in addition to travel to work schemes and access to a wide range of local discounts. This role comes with the added benefit of a discretionary annual payment.
