Locum Specialty Doctor in Anaesthesia

The postholder will participate in the resident anaesthetic junior on-call rota and be responsible for providing elective and emergency anaesthesia for the surgical specialties listed below. In addition the postholder will provide emergency airway support to the hospital and be involved in the initial resuscitation and transfer of critically ill patients. The rota will consist of a mixture of normal days, long days and nights. It is expected that the successful applicant will perform duties appropriate to the grade and his/her level of experience.

There is a trauma list each weekday afternoon. There is a liberal Day Surgery policy.

Critical Care Provision

Patients on the Oak high dependency / enhanced care unit are managed by the admitting physicians with anaesthetic input as required. High dependency patients may be discussed with the consultant on AICU at the John Radcliffe Hospital as required. Escalation to level three care is supported with the expectation of same-day transfer to the John Radcliffe Hospital.

Paediatric intensive care facilities are sited at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and there is a retrieval service.

The post will be based jointly with the Horton Hospital and Oxford hospitals.

The Horton General Hospital in Banbury serves the growing population in the north of Oxfordshire and surrounding areas. It has both inpatient and day case beds and also provides outpatient clinics, and is an acute general hospital providing a wide range of services.

The Horton General Hospital in Banbury is consistently one of the top five hospitals in the country for fractured neck of femur care and is also a specialist day surgery centre for both adults and children, boasting excellent quality outcomes with enviably low unanticipated admission rates following surgery.

Specialist cancer and transplant surgery is undertaken at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford; the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre is also nearby. The John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford is a major trauma centre and tertiary hospital providing multiple specialties, including neurosurgery, cardiothoracics, paediatrics, ENT, maxillofacial surgery, and plastics. There is a dedicated Women's Centre providing obstetric and benign gynaecology services.

The postholder will provide elective and emergency anaesthesia to adults and children and be part of the hospital cardiac arrest team.
