Full Job Description

We are seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking Locum Consultant in Sleep Medicine to join a well-established tertiary service at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. This is an opportunity to work within a long-standing sleep service, delivering care across the full spectrum of sleep disorders within a large, diverse population. The service operates as a regional referral centre and is embedded within a collaborative, multi-disciplinary Clinical Management Group spanning anaesthesia, pain, theatres and critical care. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care while contributing to the ongoing transformation of services. There is a strong expectation to support innovative models of care, including closer integration with community pathways and more efficient, digitally enabled delivery. You will join a supportive team with opportunities to influence service development, participate in research and clinical trials, and contribute to teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through our close partnership with the University of Leicester. UHL is one of the largest teaching trusts in the NHS, serving over one million people locally and a wider population through specialist services. With strong academic links and a clear strategic focus on innovation, partnership working and population health, this is an exciting time to join and shape the future of sleep medicine services., Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the assessment, diagnosis and management of patients referred to the Sleep Medicine service. Delivery of consultant-led Sleep Medicine outpatient clinics, including assessment of patients with suspected obstructive sleep apnoea, sleep-related breathing disorders, hypersomnolence, insomnia, parasomnias and complex sleep disturbance. Clinical review and interpretation of sleep investigations, including WatchPAT, home sleep studies, actigraphy, polysomnography and MSLT results, ensuring timely clinical decision-making and communication of outcomes. To provide clinical triage of referrals, ensuring patients are directed to the most appropriate diagnostic or clinical pathway in line with clinical need, referral information and service protocols. To contribute to the reduction of waiting times, diagnostic delays and RTT pressures through effective clinical prioritisation, pathway redesign and engagement with service improvement. To promote new ways of working and co-ordinating care for patients in the community, supporting integrated pathways across primary care, respiratory medicine, anaesthetics, neurology, ENT and other relevant specialties. To take part in multidisciplinary case conferences and clinical discussions for complex sleep patients where required. To contribute to teaching, research, audit and service evaluation within Sleep Medicine.

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030). We have four primary goals:

  • high-quality care for all,
  • being a great place to work,
  • partnerships for impact, and
  • research and education excellence
  • And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities. Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:
  • we are compassionate,
  • we are proud,
  • we are inclusive, and
  • we are one team
  • This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve. About the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust: https://www.uhleicester.nhs.uk
