Full Job Description

A Vacancy at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. The post is designed to improve the care of older medical patients, particularly at the beginning of an episode of illness and improve the interface between Community Geriatrics and the Acute Trust in West Kent. It will provide 7.5 DPAs of geriatric medicine with 1 DPA allocated for out of hours GIM responsibilities and 1.5 SPAs, with the understanding that this will be reviewed as the successful candidate takes on educational supervision responsibilities, leadership or research. The successful applicant will work as a team of Consultant Geriatricians, having the opportunity to work within the Acute Frailty Units and in-patient wards as both sites. As a department we operate a ward based system within the Medicine and Emergency Care Division, with a dedicated medical team on each ward. There would be the opportunity for outpatient work to support the acute frailty and post -discharge review of patients. The Trust was formed in April 2000 by the merger of the Mid Kent Healthcare Trust and the Kent & Sussex Weald NHS Trust. It provides general hospital services to a population of approximately 460,000 in West Kent and North of East Sussex, and some specialist services to a considerably larger population. The Trust's major hospitals are The Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury and The Maidstone Hospital in Kent's County Town. The Trust's Headquarters are at Maidstone Hospital. The Trust's Chairman is Dr Annette Doherty, the Chief Executive is Mr Miles Scott and the Medical Director Dr Sara Mumford. The Chief of Service for Medicine and Emergency Care is Dr Simon Webster. The Clinical Director for Acute & Geriatric Medicine is Dr Katy Davies. The Clinical Lead for Care of the Elderly is Dr Owen Ingram. Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust ranks among the top 10 NHS Trusts nationwide and was named the second-best Trust to work for in the South East in the 2023 and 2024 NHS Staff Survey. We are a large acute hospital trust in south-east England, providing general hospital services and specialist care to around 600,000 residents in West Kent and East Sussex. With a dedicated and diverse team of over 8,000 staff we are proud to offer specialised cancer services to over two million people through the Kent Oncology Centre. Fordcombe Hospital, near Tunbridge Wells, became part of the Trust in October 2024. Specialising in planned care, it offers two operating theatres, 28 inpatient and day-care beds, diagnostic services (X-ray, MRI, CT, and endoscopy), and consultation/treatment rooms.
