Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant in Colorectal & Emergency General Surgery to work across the University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough sites in Cardiff. This locum post is available for a period of 12 months whilst covering extended sickness absence of the post holder.
This role will provide essential support to the emergency general surgery rota and contribute to the continued development of our colorectal subspecialty services.
Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.
Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.
You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary for this post is £121,264 per annum.
Applicants should preferably either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within three months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview.
Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee., The Colorectal Department provides secondary care to Cardiff and Vale and delivers tertiary services across Wales. The unit has a substantial colorectal cancer workload, which is conducted predominantly through robotic and laparoscopic surgery, supported by an active MDT with Velindre NHS Trust. Additional specialist services include peritoneal malignancy (cytoreduction and HIPEC), anal cancer and AIN MDTs, and a dedicated complex endotherapy MDT providing TEO. The unit engages in a National MDT for early rectal cancer which provides access to contact radiotherapy treatment.
There is a significant inflammatory bowel disease service with weekly MDT meetings and joint Gastroenterology clinics. The full spectrum of IBD surgery is undertaken, including ileo anal pouch procedures and complex Crohn's disease surgery. A well-established pelvic floor MDT and service is in place, offering sacral nerve stimulation and pelvic floor reconstructive surgery in collaboration with urogynaecology colleagues.
Cardiff is the designated centre for intestinal failure (IF) and home TPN in Wales, supported by a weekly IF MDT and a dedicated multidisciplinary team. Additional subspecialist activity includes complex abdominal wall reconstruction and combined procedures with endometriosis and gynae-oncology teams.
