Full Job Description

Applications are invited for the post of a Consultant General Surgeon with an interest in colorectal surgery. The post is also part of the well-established Emergency General Surgery (EGS) model that currently involves a 4 person EGS consultant team. There are plans to expand the EGS workforce within the general surgery unit., The Whittington is a key provider of general surgery services in North Central London. We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic consultant who is eager to assist with the development of both elective and emergency general surgery services across the Trust with a key aim of improving patient experience.

The job will encompass all aspects of elective general surgery with the possibility of developing sub-speciality interests such as IBD, major abdominal wall reconstruction, pelvic floor etc. The successful candidate should have experience in major colorectal resection surgery and proctology. Experience in robotically assisted colorectal resections will be desirable as the department has recently acquired its first robotic platform. There will be the opportunity for JAG-accredited surgeons to perform regular endoscopy. There is a well-developed weekly benign GI MDT in which a successful candidate will be expected to be an integral member.

Candidates must hold appropriate Royal College (or equivalent accreditation) in General Surgery. They should be on the GMC's Specialist Register or within 3 months of being admitted to the Specialist Register.

Whittington Health serves a richly diverse population and works hard to ensure that all our services are fair and equally accessible to everyone. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the way we look after our staff. We aim to employ a workforce which is as representative as possible of this population, so we are open to the value of differences in age, disability, gender, marital status, pregnancy and maternity, race, sexual orientation, and religion or belief. The Trustbelieves that as a public sector organisation we have an obligation to have recruitment, training, promotion and other formal employment policies and procedures that are sensitive to these differences. We think that by doing so, we are better able to treat our patients as well as being a better place to work.
