Full Job Description

The North East & Yorkshire Net Zero Hub is part of a national network of Local Net Zero Hubs set up to help local areas and the communities they serve to develop and deliver the energy projects they need to meet local growth ambitions and national clean energy targets. We are looking to fill two vacancies within our local capacity support team to help deliver the government's Local Power Plan and area-based Local Growth Strategies. You will work with key stakeholders in Local Authorities and community energy organisations to create compelling business cases and develop pipelines of commercially investible local energy projects that will help to drive forward the generation of renewable power that is locally owned, locally deployed and benefits local people. The successful post holders will be valued members of the North East & Yorkshire Net Zero Hub team, working collaboratively with colleagues across its workstreams to deliver regional impacts and contribute to its overarching delivery objectives. In doing so you will ensure that learnings are shared and opportunities optimised to replicate, scale up and deliver across boundaries. The two roles will provide particular support to communities in the Tees Valley and in North Yorkshire respectively, building relationships across constituent local authorities and helping them identify strategic approaches to implementing low carbon energy pathways. There is also a requirement to contribute to Hub-wide delivery and projects delivered in collaboration with other team members., As proud supporters of the Armed Forces Covenant, we are committed to supporting veterans find and secure employment opportunities. The successful candidates will be enthusiastic about local energy and place-based solutions, be strong collaborators, work well across a diverse geography and dispersed team and be comfortable working with external stakeholders, including Local Authorities, businesses and community organisations. You will have experience of working on the development of capital infrastructure projects in a local government context, and an understanding of what makes a good, investible business case, as well as some familiarity with the policy context of clean power, energy security and energy as an enabler of growth. Ideally you will have some knowledge of renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind and hydro and/or an awareness of different commercial funding routes beyond government grant funding and of commercial financial models that can be explored. You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as being highly organised, independently motivated and able to prioritise your own workload. The role will require a keen problem solver, able to identify where they can add value to support delivery and how to access additional support as needed. The ability to travel independently throughout the region is desirable.

Tees Valley is where five distinct boroughs come together to make one exceptional destination in which to invest, live, work and visit. The Tees Valley Combined Authority has made huge progress since its creation, taking on devolved responsibilities from Government for transport, infrastructure, skills, business investment, and developing local collaborations on culture, tourism and housing. These powers are backed up by substantial funding, a ten-year plan (approved in 2019) outlines how £588million worth of spending will support the creation of 16,785 jobs and an additional £1.48billion to the area's economic output. The investment plan, which supports the delivery of the Combined Authority's Strategic Economic Plan was first launched in 2017 and includes £20million for a major transformational project in each of the five local authority boroughs, and an indigenous Growth Fund of £50million to improve and revitalise towns and communities. We're proud of our historical impact across the globe - from celebrated explorers and introducing the first passenger railway to providing the steel that built the modern world. That legacy lives on today in the area's rail and engineering industries, our deep-sea port and advanced manufacturing heart. Tees Valley is also a dynamic business location for digital and creative technologies, and a leading destination for process industry and new energy companies. We love our diverse region, the five boroughs and their unique strengths that make Tees Valley greater than the sum of its parts, where the industrial skyline impressively frames rolling green landscapes and beautiful coastlines. A place of cultural and economic growth.
