Full Job Description
Undertake a full teaching load (pro-rata), including the development, delivery, co-teaching and evaluation of modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level within Language and Linguistics. To supervise students and to carry out administrative duties within the work area as required.. To pursue excellence in, teaching and to inspire others to do the same., Teaching
- Design and deliver teaching and assessment programmes for courses and contribute to module development as part of a module team
- Inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students under the guidance of a mentor / module leader and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students.
- Supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Master's students
- Supply pastoral care through both acting as a Personal Tutor and providing support and guidance to students, building and establishing trust Scholarship
- Contribute to scholarship in the area of work through participation in , seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of individual scholarship
- Engage in scholarly activity through journal articles and/or outputs which advance knowledge within the area of work
- Contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider university community
- Carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking paper and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work Other
- Engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School's profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile
- Undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance in the role of Lecturer
- Mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on personal development
- Participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world
- Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role.
The School of English, Communication and Philosophy at Cardiff University is seeking to appoint a 0.6FTE Lecturer in Language and Linguistics for the academic year 2026/27. This post is being offered in a Teaching and Scholarship area related to discourse studies. The successful applicant(s) will contribute to our teaching provision across all levels of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, within the area identified above. An ability and willingness to teach in other areas of language and linguistics is advantageous. The successful candidate(s) will bring engaging approaches to module delivery and assessment and will be committed to delivering an excellent student experience while contributing to the enhancement of Cardiff's distinctive provision. From August 2026, this post will sit within our new School of Global Humanities, which brings together the current Schools of: English, Communication and Philosophy; History, Archaeology and Religion; Modern Languages; Music and Welsh. This new approach to the humanities at Cardiff allows us to strengthen and develop existing interdisciplinary collaborations and provides the space to explore previously untapped connections., 1. Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience. Knowledge, Skills and Experience 2. Teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level. 3. Demonstrate specialist knowledge and current advancements within academic subject area 4. Ability to design, deliver and continuously develop modules across the Schools teaching programmes. Pastoral, Communication and Team Working 5. Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a range of media 6. The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor. Other 7. Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and teamworking within work, 8. Relevant professional qualification(s) 9. Proven ability to work without close supervision 10. Salary: £41,064 - £46,049 per annum, pro-rata for hours worked (Grade 6). New appointments are usually made at the bottom of the salary scale.
