If you are passionate about making a difference through supporting disabled students, an exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Student Disability and Inclusion team at the University of Southampton. As a Learning Support Assistant, you will provide support for disabled students including those with physical disabilities, mental health and wellbeing conditions, long-term health conditions, and neurodivergent students., We are seeking to recruit Learning Support Assistants for all STEM subjects, notably biology, chemistry, physics, maths, engineering, medicine, and computer science. The duties are set out in the Job Description below and will include notetaking, study assistance, lab/workshop/skills support, and practical assistance in academic settings around the campus(es). LSAs use online teaching and learning facilities to enhance support. The ability to take notes directly on a laptop would be an advantage.
You should have a good understanding and interest in the academic activities required of students in Higher Education and a degree or equivalent as desirable.
You will need to be available to provide in-person support for at least 10 hours across a standard week or at least one full day per week during term time.
You will bring an excellent understanding of confidentiality, data protection and professional boundaries. In addition, you will need good concise communication skills, plus time management and personal organisation skills.
You will demonstrate appropriate sensitivity to the needs of disabled students in a positive, enabling, and non-judgemental manner and work to facilitate access within the remit of the role.
Training in Notetaking Skills, Disability awareness and administrative tasks associated with the role will be provided. Further opportunities for continuing professional development and networking will be available throughout the year.
The hours of work can be flexible, depending on the students' timetables, but will usually follow a weekly pattern across each semester.
Training and initial work will be from 15^th September 2025. Reappointment in the 2026-27 academic year can be discussed. Appointment is subject to enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
