About the Team
The Data Hub is HM Treasury’s central data function and centre of excellence for sophisticated analytics and data management. Led by the Chief Data Officer of the Treasury, we work with partners inside and outside government. The Hub implements the Treasury’s data strategy by developing data capability and driving data-led transformation across the department. We provide strategic coordination and support to teams, using data tools and technologies on new and existing data sources. The Hub applies innovative methods to enable rich analysis and support departmental objectives. We deliver new insights and improve decision making. You will join a multidisciplinary team of data engineers, data scientists, and generalists who collaborate closely, value learning, and share knowledge. The team works on products widely used across the organisation.
About the Job
As a Lead Software Developer, you will work on the following:
- Back-End Application Development and Service Ownership: Build, develop, and maintain protected, adaptable, and resilient back-end services using Python frameworks (e.g., Flask), Azure cloud services, and related technologies. Ensure applications and services operate optimally in production, proactively monitor performance, respond to issues, and continuously improve service quality and availability.
- Own the creation and development of accessible, intuitive, and user-focused front-end applications that fulfil user needs. Use Python-based front-end frameworks like Plotly Dash and JavaScript frameworks such as React when suitable.
- Solution Architecture and Systems Integration: Build and ensure scalable software architectures that fulfil business and user requirements. Assess and choose suitable technologies, architectural patterns, and development methods, guaranteeing smooth integration among applications, data platforms, APIs, and enterprise services within HM Treasury and, when necessary, the broader government.
- User Engagement and Agile Product Development: Engage extensively with users throughout the software development lifecycle, conducting discovery activities, capturing requirements, validating assumptions, and facilitating testing. Apply user-centred development principles to ensure products are driven by user needs and deliver measurable value to the organisation.
- Technical Leadership and Delivery: Deliver technical direction across software development initiatives, ensuring technical quality is upheld during the entire software lifecycle. Support development teams in embracing up-to-date engineering approaches, handle technical risks and dependencies, and facilitate successful delivery by applying agile and iterative processes.
- Security, Standards and Engineering Excellence: Ensure that software, services, and platforms are built with appropriate security controls, operational monitoring, and governance from the beginning.
- Innovation and New Technologies: Find chances to use innovative technologies, including generative AI and other new tools, to improve business processes and enhance user experiences. Work to increase interpersonal efficiency. Support the safe, responsible, and efficient introduction of new technologies throughout HM Treasury.
- Software Development Champion: Support the growth of engineering skills throughout the team and organisation, and promote the use of effective software engineering methods.
About You
You're someone who can demonstrate experience of:
- Programming and Build in Software Engineering: Strong hands-on experience crafting, developing, and maintaining software applications for both front-end and back-end technologies. This includes Python frameworks and modern software engineering techniques.
- Systems Architecture: Experience composing and constructing secure, scalable, and maintainable solutions using cloud technologies. Preference for Azure, but experience across Google or Amazon cloud services is welcome.
- User Focus & Agile Product Delivery: Experience in delivering digital products through Agile approaches that effectively satisfy user needs. It involves direct interaction with interested parties, refining the product from their input, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure continuous progress.
- Technical Leadership & Engineering Culture: Experience offering technical guidance, mentoring colleagues, and actively encouraging sound software engineering approaches throughout a team or organisation.
Some of the Benefits our people love!
- 25 days annual leave (rising to 30 after 5 years), plus 8 public holidays and the King’s birthday (unless you have a legacy arrangement as an existing Civil Servant). Additionally, we operate flexitime systems, allowing employees to take up to an additional 2 days off each month
- Flexible working patterns (part-time, job-share, condensed hours)
- Generous parental and adoption leave packages
- Access to a generous Defined Benefit pension scheme with employer contributions of 28.97%
- Access to a cycle-to-work salary sacrifice scheme and season ticket advances
