The Data Hub is HM Treasury’s central data function and centre of excellence for sophisticated analytics and data management. Led by the Chief Data Officer of the Treasury, we work with partners inside and outside government. We provide strategic coordination and support to teams, using data tools and technologies on new and existing data sources. The Hub applies innovative methods to enable rich analysis and support departmental objectives. We deliver new insights and improve decision making. You will join a multidisciplinary team of data engineers, data scientists, and generalists who collaborate closely, value learning, and share knowledge. The team works on products widely used across the organisation

About the Job

In this role you will;

  • Take ownership of sourcing data sets from diverse origins at assorted levels of development. Your duties encompass revealing data from systems, integrating data from multiple systems, and offering streaming services. You will partner with others to strategize and assess these services, ensuring perfect delivery.
  • Coordinate data products following HMT’s data strategy. Use your Python and cloud systems expertise. Ensure product reliability and respond quickly to issues.
  • Produce data models using experience with a wide range of data engineering tools, where your understanding of industry-recognised data-modelling patterns helps you build, code, and test programs for data infrastructure development. You also set and use agreed standards and tools, as well as developing resilient, scalable, and future-proof services to meet user needs.
  • Actively scope and undertake projects, including web app development and data engineering. Your innovative outlook will help you identify and take advantage of opportunities to ensure efficient and effective performance, influencing the data architecture in place. You will explore new ways of conducting business and interpersonal processes.
  • Promote guidelines in data engineering, including the acquisition, storage, and sharing of data for modelling and policy development. By providing overall technical leadership within the Hub, you will facilitate development opportunities across HMT in data and data science.
  • Support the expansion of the data platform by sharing work, pair programming, and proposing process improvements. As Principal Data Engineer, you will boost efficiency throughout the department by maintaining and advancing data engineering projects in response to user feedback. You will engage with a group of data specialists, aiding HMT through a broad range of projects, and uphold connections with customers both inside and outside HMT.

You will be maintaining and developing a variety of projects dedicated to data infrastructure. These products are used by a wide variety of HMT staff: improving them will help the department work more efficiently. You'll also work alongside data experts, providing support for a wide portfolio of projects at HMT, and hold relationships with customers within HMT and beyond.

About You

  • You will have an extensive background in Python for data engineering and web application development as well as extensive expertise in SQL. You can demonstrate considerable experience with at least one major Cloud provider (Azure preferred, Google Cloud or AWS acceptable) and have also shown success in implementing a product and leading customer relationships, as well as the ability to act on feedback and apply good product management practices
