Full Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a lawyer to join the Debt Products Legal (DPL) team to advise on lending and overdraft products, largely focused on supporting the Business and Commercial Banking (BCB) business unit. DPL support secured and unsecured lending and play a critical role in supporting BCB's lending and overdraft proposition end to end. There will also be exciting opportunities to support growth, change and innovation across digital channels as BCB evolves. The role will focus primarily on supporting the BCB business unit but some aspects of the role may relate to CIB (Corporate & Institutional Banking) as we operate as one agile team. We have helped support a simpler customer experience by developing market standard terms & templates with appropriate panel firms and offering solutions using digital platforms & tools. DPL serves as a centre of excellence and business partner, bringing a diverse mix of people, skills and expertise to the Group in managing the legal risks arising from our lending and overdraft products, generating insight and value. We operate as an agile team and there will be opportunities to engage in and influence across the wider range of activities the team supports.,

  • Operate as a specialist legal adviser to BCB Stakeholders in respect of lending and security matters in both unregulated and regulated lending;
  • Act as a source of professional expertise for business partners and assist with the development of lending product journeys, policy and procedures;
  • Provide technical legal input to support delivery of transactions and projects in response to Legal and Regulatory change and continuous improvement, including the digital transformation of BCB products and customer journeys;
  • Provide support to our business areas on Legal Risk Management using the relevant risk management policy framework;
  • Contribute to reporting of legal or governance issues within our area, inputting to recommended solutions as required;
  • Build trust and maintain internal network and relationships to provide appropriate professional advice to achieve the Group's objectives.
  • Positively influence the appropriate use of Legal Panel arrangements, in particular the selection, instruction and supervision of panel law firms and managing exceptions;
  • Challenge and influence our partners, and deputise for senior colleagues where appropriate;
  • Deal in a consistent manner with sophisticated matters according to scale, scope and specialism;
  • Collaborate with the other key legal areas within BCCIB Legal, both to support our business and to positively influence our community as a great place to work;
  • Be agile and keen to upskill and willing to support legal, regulatory or other projects across DPL as well as wider BCB & CIB Legal teams, products and businesses as appropriate., Our ambition is to be the leading UK business for diversity, equity and inclusion supporting our customers, colleagues and communities, and we're committed to creating an environment in which everyone can thrive, learn and develop.

    A qualified lawyer with a current practising certificate in a relevant jurisdiction;
  • Experience and a good appreciation of the legal and regulatory framework and market practices applying to commercial lending to Business Banking, SME and Mid Corporate customers and related security matters;
  • Post-qualifying legal experience in the above areas of expertise.
  • And any experience of these would be great
  • A working knowledge or familiarity with the regulatory framework applying to commercial lending, i.e. CCA requirements, MCOB exemptions, the FCA's Consumer Credit sourcebook (CONC) and PRIN.
