Full Job Description

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint One LAS Specialty Registrar (ST3-ST5) in Stroke Medicine to join our team to cover a vacancy. The appointment is to commence on 6th August 2026 for a fixed term period of 12 months.

This is not a formal Training post and does not carry an NTN, although recognition of the year as sub speciality training for those in UK training schemes may be sought by the applicant from their Postgraduate Deanery as part of a formal Out of Programme Training (OOPT). Full MRCP(including PACES) and ALS are essential criteria to be considered for this post.

The post will include a range of experience working in Hyperacute, acute and stroke rehabilitation care, gaining experience across the whole pathway. The post holder will be required to work 8 months in Sheffield and 4 months in Doncaster which will support gaining specialist experience of working in a DGH HASU and a neuroscience centre as part of the stroke network.

As this post is not recognised as a 'training post', full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required. If the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required and provided.

The duties of this post are equivalent to Speciality Registrar ST3+ level.

Main duties of the job

The duties of this post are equivalent to Specialty Registrar ST3+ Level.

The post will give the opportunity to gaining experience in the whole stroke pathway. This includes experience in rehabilitation in a community setting, in addition to 4 months working in Doncaster where you will get the opportunity of working in HASU in a hospital. You will also be involved in selecting patients for transfer for mechanical thrombectomy and experience assessing patients with possible stroke in A&E.

The appointee will be responsible in their duties to the stroke physicians and stroke-interested neurologists.

The post includes participation on the weekend and Bank Holiday Stroke StR on call rota in Sheffield on 1 in 5 rota pattern.

There is a requirement, during the HASU block to work 1:5 twilight weeks (1pm-9pm). During the HASU block there are also some early shifts commencing at 8 am (see table).

Throughout the 12 months, there is also a requirement to work weekends on HASU 8am-8pm on a 1:5 basis and to contribute to the Bank Holiday on call rota
