Full Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Full Time Junior Clinical Fellow in General Surgery. The post will be based at the Grange University Hospital, SE Wales for a fixed term period of 12 months from August 2026.

This post is suitable for junior doctors considering or seeking a career in a surgical specialty, and/or those wishing to gain experience in surgery prior to applying to other specialties e.g. radiology or general practice, or who seek further experience at core training level before applying to Higher Surgical Training in General Surgery. Many previous post holders have successfully applied to Core Surgical Training posts and other national specialty selection processes. Recent post holders secured their first choice core surgical training posts through National Selection.

"These are the current applicable pay scales; however, these may change upon implementation of the framework agreement for reform to the terms and conditions of service for resident doctors and dentists in Wales. Further details can be found atBMA+-+Framework+Agreement+Wales.", A named educational supervisor and clinical supervisors will be provided, and training opportunities will be equivalent to those available to our core surgical trainees in general surgery post on the All-Wales core surgical training scheme. There will be opportunities to participate in teaching, research, audit and quality improvement, plus advice and support regarding development of a surgical portfolio and career guidance. These posts will rotate around upper GI, colorectal and breast surgery for 4 months each for elective activities, with all on call activity based in the Grange University hospital for the full 12 months.

Clinically this post includes commitments to emergency and elective general and GI surgery, as well ongoing inpatient and outpatient care. Team rotas within sub-specialties ensure equal access to training opportunities alongside higher surgical trainees, core surgical trainees and Foundation doctors. Clinical commitments will be primarily in the Grange University Hospital, with elective commitments on other sites within the Health Board, including Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, Ystrad Mynach and Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny.

For this reason, post-holders will be expected to travel independently between sites; travel expenses will be reimbursed in line with Health Board policy.
