Full Job Description

PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £27,600 - £33,900 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights. We're happy to discuss flexible working. If you'd like to, please indicate your preference in the application - though there's no obligation to do so now. Flexible working will be part of the discussion at offer stage. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE The BBC East Midlands region covers the biggest and best stories from the counties of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire - including vast parts of the Peak District - Leicestershire and Rutland. We are a multi-platform newsroom with an approach that prioritises digital first, and seek to achieve maximum impact across radio, online, and TV. The role primarily involves newsreading, but as a multi-platform journalist in the East Midlands, you will be asked to tell stories across radio, online, TV and social media. On the newsreading side, you would be the voice of news in Derby - home to one of the BBC's most successful local radio stations. You will also be part of the local story team in Derby, which places high emphasis on cross-platform working, creativity and ensuring your content has as high an impact across the BBC as it possibly can. You will be a self-starter, as comfortable working on your own as you are in a team, able to make editorial decisions quickly. Some weekend working will also be required. WHY JOIN THE TEAM The local story team in Derby is a really supportive environment to reach your full potential. We put a premium on original stories, and seeking the maximum impact for them across the BBC, in particular the BBC News website. You'll be broadcasting on multiple award-winning BBC Radio Derby, including on the breakfast show, as well as East Midlands Today and - potentially - network channels. YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Finding original stories and thinking creatively how to tell them across each of our platforms
  • Reading radio bulletins across our local output
  • Building a strong knowledge of the patch and our audiences
  • Be a self-starter who can work independently under pressure and motivate others

Very strong on-air voice and engaging personality
  • Good news judgement and understanding of editorial guidelines
  • Excellent writing that translates well for radio, online and TV
  • Track record of generating ideas for news programmes and services
  • Good understanding of BBC Local priorities for audience growth
  • DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:
  • Knowledge of the editorial area
  • Full driving licence
