Job Description
Joiner - The Army
- Plan carpentry and joinery tasks from sketches and apply them in field
- Learn to use and maintain workshop machinery
- Prepare timber for use, manufacture joints, use adhesives, produce windows, door frames and fitments
- Carry out general construction work including first-fix timber frames and second-fix joinery fitments
- Construct scaffolding, interpret scaffold terms and erect access scaffold and install ladders
- Install partitions, floors, roofing, timber-framed buildings, formwork and shoring
- Study for carpentry qualifications (including Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Carpentry and Joining (Military Engineering) and L2 apprenticeship)
Qualifications
- Be between 16 years 6 months and 35 years 6 months
- Have a GCSE Grade A-C/9-5 or Scottish National 5 in Maths, English Language and one other subject
- Be able to pass a basic fitness test

- You don’t need to know how to do the job before you get here, because we’ll give you all the training you need.
- Step 1: Initial military training to become a soldier (basic military training if you’re a Junior Soldier and adult basic training if you’re a Regular Soldier).
- Step 2: 12 weeks at the Royal School of Military Engineering to learn military engineering skills including demolition and bridge building.
- Step 3: 21 weeks of carpentry training including using machinery and hand tools to make timber building materials.
- You’ll also receive 30 days annual leave every year (plus bank holidays and extra leave after operations), free medical and dental care, cheaper living costs, and free gym and sports facilities.
- Unless you’re away on operations or training exercises, you’ll normally work 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
- You’ll even get to travel the world, taking part in the Army’s adventurous training, and spending dedicated time playing the sports you love.
