Housekeeping Assistants

The Housekeeping Assistant at Yeovil District Hospital is responsible for maintaining high standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and safety across clinical and non-clinical areas. The role supports infection prevention and control by carrying out daily and periodic cleaning tasks, handling waste appropriately, and ensuring a clean, safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors. The post holder works as part of a team to deliver a reliable, efficient housekeeping service in line with hospital policies and standards.,

• Carry out routine and periodic cleaning of clinical and non-clinical areas in line with hospital standards and schedules
Maintain high levels of cleanliness to support infection prevention and control requirements Safely handle, segregate, and dispose of waste, including clinical waste Clean and replenish housekeeping equipment and supplies, ensuring stock levels are maintained Report any maintenance issues, hazards, or concerns to the supervisor promptly Follow all health and safety procedures, including correct use of PPE and cleaning chemicals Work collaboratively as part of the housekeeping team to ensure efficient service delivery Respond to ad hoc cleaning requests as required to support patient care and operational needs Maintain professionalism and respect when working in patient-facing environments, The Housekeeping Assistant plays a key role in maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic environment across Yeovil District Hospital. The role supports infection prevention and control by ensuring all areas are cleaned in line with required standards and schedules, helping to reduce the risk of hospital-acquired infections and promote a positive experience for patients, visitors, and staff. In addition to cleaning duties, the role involves supporting ward activities such as serving meals and beverages, replenishing water, and working closely with nursing and clinical teams to meet patient needs. Housekeeping Assistants are responsible for using cleaning equipment safely, following colour coding systems, and ensuring correct waste segregation. The role requires good teamwork, attention to detail, and the ability to follow procedures and instructions, contributing to the overall efficiency and quality of the hospital environment.


• No formal qualifications required; basic education (GCSE level or equivalent) desirable
• Ability to understand and follow instructions, procedures, and cleaning schedules
• Basic knowledge of hygiene and health & safety practices (training will be provided)
• Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
• Previous cleaning or housekeeping experience is desirable but not essential
• Willingness to undertake training relevant to the role, including infection control and use of equipment, Previous experience working in a housekeeping, cleaning, or healthcare environment, Previous experience in a cleaning or housekeeping role, or a similar environment
• Experience of following schedules, procedures, and instructions
• Understanding of basic cleaning standards and hygiene practices
• Experience of working as part of a team in a fast-paced environment, Previous experience working within a healthcare setting
• Familiarity with infection prevention and control practices
• Experience in handling clinical waste and using cleaning equipment and machinery
• Experience responding to urgent or ad hoc cleaning requests in a busy environment, Reliable, punctual, and able to work flexible shifts, including weekends and evenings
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as part of a team
• Good attention to detail and commitment to high standards of cleanliness
• Physically able to carry out manual handling duties associated with cleaning tasks
• Positive attitude and willingness to learn and develop within the role
• Ability to follow instructions and comply with policies and procedures
