Full Job Description

FM Conway is seeking a talented and motivated Highway Design Engineer to join our dynamic Consultancy team. As a Highway Design Engineer, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of our urban landscapes across London and the Southeast. Reporting directly to the Senior Engineer, you will be involved in all stages of highway schemes, from initial feasibility studies and option development, through to detailed design, consultation and implementation. You will have the opportunity to work on various aspects of highway engineering, such as highway geometric design, public realm design, cycle infrastructure development, bus scheme improvements, junction design, drainage systems, including Sustainable Urban Drainage (SuDS), safety enhancement schemes, implementation of 20 mph zones, parking scheme design, utility diversions (NRSWA) and Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) measures.

You will also be responsible for developing highway and public realm design solutions of varying sizes and complexity, undertaking design checking, preparing feasibility and option reports, and supporting the successful delivery of projects against agreed programmes, budgets and quality requirements. The role will involve working closely with clients, stakeholders and wider project teams, while identifying and managing project risks and changes throughout the design process.

This is a full time, permanent position, based from our Sevenoaks Head Office.

The duties of the Highway Design Engineer will include:

Designing and implementing highway engineering solutions as part of design teams

Developing highway and public realm design solutions from feasibility through to detailed design and implementation

Preparing feasibility and option reports, drawings, schedules, bills of quantities, cost estimates and other technical documents in accordance with local procedures

Undertaking design checking and quality assurance to ensure high technical standards are maintained

Identifying project risks and appropriate mitigation measures, contributing to risk reporting, incident recording and investigation, and identifying opportunities for future improvements

Managing project programmes, budgets and risks, and monitoring milestones and expenditure against agreed programmes and budgets

Developing price and programme responses to client briefs and supporting the effective management of changes to project requirements

Undertaking designer duties and tasks as required under the CDM Regulations

Ensuring that relevant highway standards and guidance, including DMRB, TSRGD and the Traffic Signs Manual, are appropriately considered within designs

Ensuring that day-to-day correspondence and other communications are handled professionally and effectively

Working collaboratively with clients, stakeholders and project teams to ensure successful project delivery

We are seeking a qualified Highway Design Engineer who has experience within the highways sector. You will be degree qualified with a BEng / BSc in Civil Engineering or equivalent. To be considered for this role you must have experience of designing new development-related projects, particularly the technical aspects of highways adoption issues, S38 and S278, highway and public realm design. You will have strong communication skills, good commercial awareness and experience of developing highway design solutions from feasibility through to detailed design.
