Highly Specialist Womens Health Physiotherapist

To act as a specialist resource for physiotherapy staff and other health care professionals.

• To take a lead role in providing Pelvic Health physiotherapy care, including the
advanced assessment and treatment of patients who have diverse presentation and can be highly complex. To work in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to provide clinical diagnosis, and as an autonomous practitioner plan and perform appropriate treatment and maintain records and ensure others do the same. To assess to a high level and be able to treat and provide advice on cases.
• To undertake a significant clinical caseload to a high professional standard, using
specialist knowledge and skills from theoretical and practical experience to treat complex or highly complex patients. To use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively highly complex information with patients to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes, and to ensure an understanding of their condition/problem so that patients are supported in self-management of their condition. Communication of patient progress and forward planning may be discussed with family members and carers where appropriate.
• To use the communication skills of persuasion, motivation, explanation and obtaining informed consent will be used with a wide variety of patients. Issues may include bereavement, grieving, loss of independence and prognosis, and must be dealt with empathetically and confidentially. Barriers to effective communication will regularly be
evident including: cognitive impairment, expressive and receptive communication difficulties, embarrassment, anxiety, pain, fear and visual/hearing impairment. When a barrier is identified strategies to overcome it will be put into place.
• To use communication skills to address language and cultural diversity issues.
• To communicate complex patient related information effectively, to ensure collaborative working with the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) members across health and social care sectors ensuring the delivery of a co-ordinated multidisciplinary service.
