Full Job Description

We are looking for a motivated and experienced Highly Specialist Renal Dietitian to lead, develop, and deliver a high-quality dietetic service for adult patients with kidney disease across all stages of care.

This is a pivotal role offering expert clinical input, service leadership, and supervision of both specialist and junior dietitians. Working closely with the renal multidisciplinary team, you will make a meaningful impact on the lives of patients with complex renal needs.

Your role will include providing expert input on the renal wards at Gloucestershire Hospitals, leading outpatient clinics, supporting patients at haemodialysis centres, and managing those receiving peritoneal dialysis. You will collaborate closely with specialist nurses, pharmacists, psychologists, and consultants to deliver truly holistic, patient-centred care.

You will join a friendly, well-established team comprising seven consultants, specialist nurses, AHPs, and expert renal dietitians committed to delivering the highest standards of nutritional care. We are proud to support career development, with opportunities to undertake the Supplementary Prescribing course, engage in renal research, and contribute to or lead on service development and quality improvement projects. You will contribute to dietetic education through the clinical training of students on placement and by delivering teaching in renal dietetics within a university setting.

Main duties of the job

Provide high-quality, complex dietetic care to renal patients across inpatient, outpatient and virtual settings.

Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, including active listening and clear communication, to deliver patient-centred care.

Work closely with the renal multidisciplinary team, building strong professional relationships with colleagues at all levels.

Manage your own caseload autonomously, using effective time management, flexibility and prioritisation to respond to changing clinical demands.

Contribute to wider dietetic services, including inpatient cover in other clinical areas when required. Appropriate training and support will be provided.

Provide line management and clinical supervision to renal dietitians, overseeing caseload allocation, service planning and high-quality care.

Conduct appraisals, provide mentorship and support staff performance and professional development.

Lead and contribute to audit, research, service evaluation and development within the renal dietetic service.

Supervise staff and support the training and development of dietetic students.

The Department of Dietetics is friendly and supportive, with our recent staff survey highlighting excellent teamwork and strong collegial relationships. The service operates across two main sites: Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH) and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (GRH). We provide a broad range of services, including Acute Adult Dietetics, Paediatrics, and several Specialist Dietetic Services such as Gastroenterology, Specialist Weight Management, Oncology, Bariatrics, and Diabetes. The Department also delivers a comprehensive Home Enteral Feeding Service.

The Department is committed to staff development and supports team members to thrive across the four pillars of practice: clinical care, education, leadership, and research.
