Full Job Description
We are looking to appoint 2 Heads of Year. The Head of Year role is a highly rewarding yet demanding position, requiring the ability to manage multiple situations at once while maintaining a strong commitment to high-quality teaching. Responsible to the Senior Leadership Team for the pastoral and academic welfare of an entire year group, and to the Head of Faculty for teaching duties, the post holder works closely with tutors, teachers, support staff, parents and external agencies. Central to the role is the promotion of the school ethos, "Create your future. Be who you are, become who you aspire to be," ensuring that every student is supported to develop confidence, ambition and a strong sense of identity.
A key element of the role is the leadership and management of the year team. This includes fostering a positive year-group ethos, monitoring behaviour, attendance and progress, and intervening early when concerns arise. It also includes the monitoring of the delivery of our centralised PSHE scheme. The Head of Year plays a vital role in supporting students' personal development, encouraging responsibility and resilience, and helping learners overcome barriers to success. The role also involves leading assemblies, chairing meetings, organising enrichment activities, supporting transitions and pathway choices, supporting careers activities, including work experience, guidance through assessment windows and maintaining clear communication with parents through reporting and parents' evenings. These responsibilities require strong organisation, resilience, adaptability and emotional intelligence, particularly when managing complex pastoral issues.
Alongside these leadership and pastoral duties, the Head of Year remains a committed classroom teacher, delivering engaging and challenging lessons that inspire students to achieve their potential. High expectations, inclusive practice and positive relationships underpin teaching and learning, reflecting the school's commitment to helping every student create their future. Balancing teaching with pastoral leadership is demanding, but offers the opportunity to make a meaningful and lasting impact on students' academic success, wellbeing and aspirations, fully embodying the ethos of enabling learners to be themselves while becoming the best they can be.
Belper School and Sixth Form Centre would like all candidates to answer specific questions for the personal statement section. For reference, here is a preview of the questions/headings:
1. Why do you want this role and what makes you well-suited to it?
2. How will you develop a strong year group ethos and what would your vision look like for your year if you were successful?
3. What positive impact have you had on students in your current and previous roles?
4. What leadership strengths and contributions would you bring to this role?
