Full Job Description
Head of Religious Studies
Start: September 2026
We have an excellent opportunity for a passionate, enthusiastic and dedicated teacher who can lead Ashford Senior School's Religious Studies (RS) department.
Reporting to the Faculty Leader for Humanities, the candidate will be committed to motivating and inspiring students from Years 7 to 13. RS is a compulsory subject for pupils in Years 7-9, an option at GCSE (studying the AQA exam board) and offered as Philosophy, Ethics and Theology at A Level (OCR).
With an excellent degree in relevant subjects, the Head of Religious Studies should be committed to stimulating students' curiosity in the subject more widely, as well as equipping them with the knowledge and skills to succeed. The post-holder should be capable of stretching all pupils, as well as those who are learning the subject in a second language.
The Faculty has developed a particularly collaborative and supportive atmosphere where resources are shared. Practitioners are encouraged to be creative and adaptive with their materials and methods, and teaching autonomy is respected.
Responding to the needs of the individual student is a vital aspect of a teacher's role at Ashford School, whether this is during lessons, co-curricular activities or in one-to-one academic.
Heads of Department at Ashford School are responsible for completing an annual Department Review in the subject and they also attend an annual Mock Review meeting. The postholder will run an annual budget and will show a strong understanding of the importance of data tracking. Furthermore, the successful candidate will show an awareness of the School's Strategic Priorities and Curriculum Philosophy.
Teachers at Ashford School enjoy a welcoming, comfortable and well-resourced environment and are provided with assistance from a range of support staff. Continuing professional development opportunities are offered to staff during the academic year.
All teachers act as Form Tutors and are expected to contribute to the co-curricular life of the School. Single person accommodation may be available in return for boarding duties.
Note - We reserve the right to interview and offer to a strong candidate prior to the closing date. It is strongly recommended that candidates submit their applications as soon as possible.
Closing date: 20th April 2026
Salary by negotiation and dependent on skills, attributes and qualifications of the successful candidate.
