Full Job Description

Holly Lodge School is seeking to appoint a Leader of Learning for Physical Education. We are a comprehensive 11-19 school and sixth form serving the diverse community of Smethwick, West Midlands. Our core values of Ambition, Opportunity and Community underpin everything we do. We believe that every child, regardless of background or starting point, is entitled to a world-class education and rich experiences that enable them to live healthy, fulfilling and meaningful lives.

Physical Education plays a vital role in realising this vision. The PE department is built on strong foundations, with a motivated and committed team who are ambitious for the next phase of development and now seek strategic and inspirational leadership. We believe in the power of a carefully planned, subject-specialist PE curriculum, supported by research-informed teaching approaches, high expectations, and high-quality pastoral care, to improve outcomes both inside and beyond the classroom.

A particular strength of the department is the developing Basketball Academy, led by a dedicated coach and supported by strong community partnerships. This provides an exciting platform to further enhance student engagement, participation, and pathways into competitive sport and leadership opportunities.

We are seeking a visionary Leader of Learning to build on existing strengths and shape a coherent, ambitious PE provision. The successful candidate will drive improvements in teaching and learning, secure strong outcomes for all students, and develop an extended and competitive programme that promotes a clear sense of belonging, excellence and aspiration. There is significant scope to grow enrichment opportunities, competitive sport, and community engagement, ensuring PE contributes powerfully to whole-school culture.

We are ambitious for the experience of our staff as well as our students. We place staff wellbeing, professional development and career progression at the heart of our work and believe that sensible workload and a positive professional culture are key to sustaining excellence.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to shape and lead PE at a pivotal stage of its development. If you are passionate about Physical Education and share our values, please see our application pack via our website:
https://holly-lodge.org/

Applicants are welcomed to discuss the position further and are encouraged to visit the school; please arrange via HLS_hr@holly-lodge.org.

Please provide a cover letter (Maximum of two sides of A4 paper) with your application outlining your skills experience in relation to the job description and person specification. Completed applications should be sent to HLS_hr@holly-lodge.org by Monday 11th May 2026 09.00am.

At Holly Lodge School we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. We expect all staff to share this commitment and to undergo appropriate checks, including enhanced DBS checks.

The role is covered by part 7 of the Immigration Act 2016 and therefore the ability to speak fluent spoken English is an essential requirement for this role. Holly Lodge supports Equal Opportunities Employment.

Please note an online check will be conducted for shortlisted candidates.
