Full Job Description
This role provides remote and flexible working. From April 2026 office attendance is required for 1 day per week increasing to 2 days per week in September 2026, subject to business need., We're inviting you to consider a 6-month secondment opportunity as Head of Economic Development at Maldon District Council.
This role sits at the heart of how we support our places, businesses and communities to thrive. It brings together economic development, tourism, culture, heritage and major events - all with the shared aim of strengthening the District now and for the future.

About this role
What the Role Involves
As Head of Economic Development, you'll:
- Provide clear and supportive leadership across economic development, tourism, events, culture and heritage
- Lead and encourage the Economic Development team, helping people feel confident, supported and able to do their best work
- Work closely with elected Members, colleagues, businesses and partners as the Council's senior professional lead for economic growth
- Take forward strategies, programmes and projects that support inclusive, sustainable growth across the district
- Oversee inward investment, business engagement, partnership working and external funding
- Use data and insight to inform decisions and respond to changing economic needs
- Provide strategic oversight of major events, ensuring they contribute positively to place-making and community identity
- Manage budgets, funding and risk in a sensible and transparent way
- Play an active part in the Council's wider leadership responsibilities, including emergency planning
Has experience in economic development, place-based growth or a related area
- Enjoys working collaboratively with a wide range of people and partners
- Has experience leading teams, projects or programmes and supporting others through change
- Is comfortable working in a local government or political environment
- Brings a thoughtful, practical and positive approach to leadership
