Full Job Description

As Head of Data Protection, you will lead UCL's Data Protection Advisory Team, providing strategic leadership and expert advice on complex data protection matters. You will oversee key areas including data breaches, Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), data sharing and processing arrangements, research activities, compliance monitoring, training, and regulatory engagement. You will manage a high-performing team, lead significant projects, influence institutional decision-making, and help shape the University's approach to data protection and information governance.

You will have substantial experience in data protection, including leading advisory teams within a large and complex organisation. You will bring strong knowledge of UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, PECR and related legislation, alongside experience advising on complex data processing, data sharing arrangements and DPIAs. You will be an excellent communicator with strong analytical skills, sound judgement, and the ability to build trusted relationships with stakeholders. Organised, collaborative and solution-focused, you will be confident managing competing priorities while delivering high-quality advice in a fast-paced environment.

The Office of the General Counsel at UCL provides strategic legal, governance and compliance advice across one of the world's leading universities. Within the Data Protection and Information Rights team, we support the University in meeting its obligations under data protection and information rights legislation while promoting a culture of transparency, accountability and good information governance.
