We are recruiting for a Head of Business Communications to join our Communications Team, based in our Darlington office. By joining us, be working at the heart of one of the most important departments in Government working on some of the most challenging and salient issues faced by Ministers.

About the Team

HM Treasury’s Communications Team leads the department’s external communications. We bring together expertise in campaigns, media, digital, strategic communications, events, stakeholder engagement, audience insight and evaluation.

Our campaign teams develop audience-led communications on Treasury priorities, working with specialist colleagues to deliver joined-up activity across different channels. We work closely with ministers, advisers, policy teams and communications colleagues across government.

We are a supportive and collaborative team where people are trusted to take ownership of their work and encouraged to develop. In this role, you will lead a campaign team while working flexibly with colleagues as priorities evolve.

About the Job

As Head of a Campaigns Desk in HM Treasury’s Communications Team, you will lead a team that communicates directly with one of three of the Treasury's most important audiences, across multiple channels, advising the Chancellor on how to shape and deliver our message for the most impact, based on insight and your expertise.

This is a fast-paced and rewarding role at the heart of the restructured Treasury communications team, working closely with the Chancellor’s team, No. 10 and senior policy officials across government.

Key responsibilities of this job include:

  • Lead business-facing communications, delivering audience-led campaigns for businesses, investors and other priority audiences.
  • Develop integrated, multi-channel campaigns across media, digital, events and stakeholder engagement.
  • Use audience insight and evaluation to improve communications and support policy development.
  • Provide strategic communications advice to senior leaders, identifying reputational risks and opportunities.
  • Build strong internal and external relationships, including with policy teams, journalists, commentators and influencers.
  • Lead high-profile communications in a fast-paced news environment, overseeing quality content, media opportunities and senior leader or ministerial visits.

About You

You will bring significant experience of leading high-profile, integrated communications in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to translate complex issues into clear and engaging content. You will understand the wider context in which you operate, anticipate opportunities and risks, and align communications with organisational priorities. You will build trusted relationships and work collaboratively with senior leaders, colleagues and partners, using sound judgement, confident strategic advice and persuasive communication to influence effectively and deliver shared objectives.

Some of the Benefits our people love!

  • 25 days annual leave (rising to 30 after 5 years), plus 8 public holidays and the King’s birthday (unless you have a legacy arrangement as an existing Civil Servant). Additionally, we operate flexitime systems, allowing employees to take up to an additional 2 days off each month
  • Flexible working patterns (part-time, job-share, condensed hours)
  • Generous parental and adoption leave packages
  • Access to a generous Defined Benefit pension scheme with employer contributions of 28%
  • Access to a cycle-to-work salary sacrifice scheme and season ticket advances
  • A range of active staff networks, based around interests (e.g. analysts, music society, sports and social club) and diversity
