Full Job Description

The post holder will form part of the middle grade tier for hand surgery, alongside SpR's from plastic surgery, Trauma & Orthopaedics and the nationally appointed ATP interface fellows. Hand Fellows will be designated a consultant clinical supervisor. As part of their weekly timetable, they will cover different hand consultant sessions. Hand Fellows will play a crucial role in the provision of emergency services for acutely injured hand patients and they will be expected to assess and treat patients in the designated acute hand injury clinics. Hand fellows are expected to support seamless cover of hand patients, with structured hand-overs and ward rounds occurring in conjunction with the on-call teams. Some of the posts will involve sessions at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and post holders will be required to make their own travel arrangements between the two sites.

The Birmingham Hand Centre is one of the largest hand units in the UK and manages tertiary referrals from the West Midlands and beyond. A vast and varied spectrum of adult trauma is treated at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital by thirteen consultant hand surgeons. There is a dedicated Hand Surgery on-call dealing with emergencies including replantation, microvascular reconstruction, complex wrist and hand injuries.

Dedicated Hand Trauma lists run on a daily basis including at weekends to deal with a large volume of cases, the majority of which are dealt with as day cases using a comprehensive upper limb regional anaesthetic block service. Elective surgery is undertaken across two sites: The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, and all types of elective work are catered for including wrist arthroscopy, small joint arthroplasty, nerve disorders including traumatic adult brachial plexus reconstruction and treatment of upper limb paralysis and spasticity.

The Royal Centre for Defence Medicine is based at University Hospital Birmingham and provides treatment for injured military personnel. The Hand Service continues to deal with combat and noncombat military trauma and offer world class reconstructive options for these injuries which are seldom seen in civilian practice., University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust strives to have an inclusive culture where everyone feels like they belong, can thrive, knows that they add value and feels valued. We do this by developing compassionate and culturally competent leaders, being values driven in all that we do and by creating a welcoming and inclusive workplace that thrives on the diversity of our people. As such we want to attract and recruit talented individuals from all backgrounds, and for each of you to feel supported for the diversity you bring, to achieve your full potential. For those staff with a disability, including physical disability, long term health condition, mental health or neurodiverse condition, this also means being committed to making reasonable adjustments needed for you to carry out your role.
