Gully Operative

Join our Highways Gully Team in Wakefield and contribute to maintaining and cleansing the council's gully and drainage network. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys physical, outdoor work and possesses a flexible attitude to meet varying operational demands. Day-to-day of the role:

• Clean and maintain approximately 12,000 highway gullies as part of a five-year cyclic programme.
• Operate gully tankers to remove debris, detritus, and contaminated water.
• Conduct drainage investigations to identify blockages and defects, and undertake necessary ironwork tasks.
• Respond to flooding incidents and participate in winter maintenance operations, including gritting.
• Assist with traffic management and ensure safety for both operatives and the public.
• Operate and maintain specialist plant and equipment, perform daily checks, and report any defects.
• Use PDA/tablet systems for receiving work instructions and recording completed tasks.
• Provide professional communication with the public during onsite operations.
• Support other highway operational teams as required, especially during peak periods.
  
  Experience in gully cleansing, drainage, highways, or street scene operations.
• Physically fit to perform manual, outdoor work in all weather conditions.
• Full UK driving licence.
• Strong awareness of health and safety protocols.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Flexibility to cover shifts at short notice, including out-of-hours and winter duties.
Desirable Skills:
• HGV licence (Class C or C+E).
• JCB/plant operation tickets.
• Hand-Arm Vibration (HAVs) certification.
• Skills in bricklaying or civil repairs.
• Experience in public sector or highways maintenance.
