Full Job Description
Make your mark on one of the biggest sporting events in Europe. Newcastle City Council is proud to be a Host City for UEFA EURO 2028 - and we're looking for an ambitious and passionate Grassroots and Community Officer to help us create a lasting legacy for our communities. This is a unique opportunity to shape how a major international tournament connects with local people. You will take a lead role in the development of inclusive social impact programmes that inspire participation, celebrate diversity and ensure the benefits of EURO 2028 are felt across every neighbourhood. About the role This is a fixed term position, until 31st October 2028. You will be at the heart of our Host City delivery team, working with partners across sport, education, and the voluntary sector to design and deliver impactful initiatives. From increasing participation in physical activity to creating meaningful opportunities for volunteers, your work will ensure communities are fully involved in the journey to EURO 2028 and beyond. You'll collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders to bring people together, champion inclusion, and embed social value into everything we do. Whether supporting local celebrations, developing programmes for under-represented groups, or capturing the stories and impact of our work, you'll play a key role in making this tournament truly belong to the people of Newcastle. Who we're looking for We're seeking someone who is driven by social impact and thrives on partnership working. You'll bring experience of delivering community or sports programmes, along with a strong commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion. You'll be confident managing projects, engaging stakeholders and turning ideas into meaningful, measurable outcomes. Most importantly, you'll be passionate about creating opportunities for people - especially those who face barriers to participation - and motivated to ensure this once in a generation event leaves a positive, lasting legacy.
This is more than a job - it's your opportunity to help define how UEFA EURO 2028 is experienced in Newcastle and to ensure its legacy reaches far beyond the final whistle.
At Newcastle City Council, we're proud, fair and ambitious. This role offers the chance to:
- Play a central role in delivering a globally significant sporting event
- Shape programmes that benefit communities for years to come
- Work with inspiring partners across sport, culture and the voluntary sector
- Be part of a team committed to inclusion, innovation and impact Be part of something bigger
