Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to invite applications for a substantive General Surgery Surgeon with a sub-specialty interest in Benign Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery based in the Department of General Surgery. This is a permanent, full-time post comprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week., This post offers an exciting opportunity to join a progressive, collaborative and forward-thinking General Surgery department. The post has been developed to support service expansion and to ensure continuity in the delivery of high-quality elective care. We are seeking to appoint a consultant with prior Upper GI/Hepatobiliary training and anticipate that the successful appointees will be able to undertake a broad range of elective and emergency procedures from an early stage in their appointment. The appointee will also be expected to contribute to the Emergency General Surgery (EGS) service as required to support the effective running of the department. They will undertake routine cholecystectomy and, where clinically appropriate, contribute to the delivery of 'hot cholecystectomy' as part of the department's acute biliary service. In addition, the postholder will be expected to undertake a broad range of general surgical procedures in line with their experience and the needs of the service, including hernia surgery and the management of benign lumps and bumps., The provisional job plan is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week. This is detailed in the indicative timetable below. The job plan will be reviewed at the annual job planning round and a formal review will be undertaken within 6 to 12 months of appointment, in line with RCS England guidance and the Trust's job planning policy. Elements of the timetable may be subject to change due to a Trust-wide reconfiguration of the theatre and outpatient schedule; any such changes will be managed in accordance with service requirements and the Trust's job planning policy., Sessions are based on the standard 4-hour NHS PA. Pre/post-operative ward rounds are explicitly itemised within the theatre PA. This indicative timetable is provisional and subject to agreement at the 612-month job plan review. 4. On-Call Commitment The post-holder will participate in: A 1:13 weekday on-call - on-site 17:00-19:00, off-site 19:00-08:00. A 1:13 weekend on-call Friday on-site 17:00-19:00, Sat & Sun on-site 08:00-14:00 The on-call General Surgery Consultant must attend the daily surgical handover or ensure that a Specialty Registrar is present. Requirements during the on-call period: Contactable via Telephone throughout the on-call period. The post-holder will be required to live or stay within a 30-minute travel time of Homerton University Hospital while on-call out-of-hours. On-call commitment is delivered in addition to the 10 PA core job plan and is recognised as follows: Unpredictable out-of-hours on-call activity attracts a Category A availability supplement (3% of basic salary). Any on-call activity consistently exceeding the standard thresholds will be reviewed and recognised through Additional Programmed Activities (APAs) at the 612-month job plan review.,
- On GMC specialist Register relevant to the post, or within 6 months of being admitted to GMC specialist register by date of interview
- CESR/Portfolio pathway, or alternative routes to specialist registration - applicant must be on Specialist Register at the time of interview Desirable
- Other higher degree or diploma (e.g. MD, PhD)
Previous consultant-level experience in General Surgery, Ability to perform routine operations in elective general surgery - Ability to safely manage general surgery emergencies.
- Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and respond appropriately to service need
- Awareness of the overall business environment in which the hospital operates
- Experience of undergraduate and post- graduate teaching
- Empathy, understanding, listening skills, patience, social skills appropriate to different types of client
- Good interpersonal skills coupled with an ability to co-operate, persuade and negotiate within a senior clinical and management team, Proven track-record of clinical leadership and service development
- xperience of educational supervision, teaching skills course/ qualification
