Full Job Description

There is an opportunity for Foundation Doctor (FY2) to join Paediaric Neurosurgery Department at Birmingham Children's Hospital for a period of 6 months starting from August 2026, with a further extension upon mutual agreement for another 6 months maximum.

Although this is officially a non-training post, the post will not be extended beyond 12 months to allow other candidates to learn and experience the service.

This post will be suitable for a person who wishes to get hands on experience in Paediatric Neurosurgery. There is adequate support from the middle grade doctors and consultants with teaching on a daily basis., The Fellow will work closely with specialist registrars under the supervision of the paediatric neurosurgical consultants. The Fellow will have responsibility for the patients on the ward. They will be expected to participate in the multi-disciplinary team meetings as well as clinics and theatre sessions. The Fellow will have ample opportunity and will be expected to lead on and participate in audits as well as research projects, presentations (local, national and international), publications in peer-reviewed journals and service improvement projects. The Fellow will also be encouraged and expected to actively get involved in the teaching of nurses and medical students.

The Fellow will participate in the hospital at night rota. They will also be expected to share responsibility for the paediatric neurosurgical patients outside of strict rota commitments.

There is a formal training/teaching program as well as bite size teaching every week. Although there will be no obligation for the fellow to participate in this program, it may be to the fellow's advantage or to the program's benefit, for him/her to do so from time to time.
