Full Job Description

A big part of what we do is looking after the natural environment - trees, green spaces and roadside areas - while making sure our highways stay safe and accessible. We work closely with partners, communities and local organisations, and we're always looking for better, smarter ways to deliver our services. About the Team You'll be leading our Forestry Operations team - around 15 people who are out there every day doing hands-on, practical work across the county. They manage everything from tree works and vegetation clearance to responding when storms hit and roads need to be made safe again. The team works across different sites and depots, and no two days are really the same. The teams work across the County on both the Public Highway as well as Council properties and depots, plus in partnership with various District Councils assisting in maintaining their tree stock through Service Level Agreements. Key Requirements We're looking for someone who's confident leading from the front - someone who understands the job inside out but can also step back and see the bigger picture., What you'll be doing day to day:

  • Leading the team and making sure work is carried out safely and to a high standard
  • Setting clear expectations and maintaining a positive team culture
  • Keeping operations running smoothly across sites and depots
  • Managing budgets and making sure the service is financially on track
  • Looking after vehicles, equipment and plant
  • Working with partners and clients, including local councils
  • Helping respond to emergency situations like storms
  • Supporting community involvement, including volunteering
  • This role would suit someone practical, confident and people-focused - someone who can lead a team, earn respect quickly, and make a real, visible difference to the local area., The Fluency Duty is outlined in the Code of Practice on the English language requirements for public sector workers. The Fluency Duty for this role is Required. You must be able to speak and provide advice in accurate spoken English to the public. We recommend submitting your application as soon as possible. We don't want to keep you waiting so we will be starting the initial shortlist and assessment process while the job advert is running. Please check your emails or applicant account via our jobs portal for any updates on your application If you are applying for this role on a secondment basis please ensure you have permission from your line manager.

  • Solid experience running operational services across different site
  • A strong background in forestry, arboriculture or grounds work
  • A really strong leadership style - someone who can build trust, challenge when needed, and bring people with them
  • The confidence to lead a hands-on team, set clear standards and foster a respectful, inclusive culture
  • Good understanding of health & safety - and a real commitment to getting it right
  • Experience managing budgets, resources and contracts with a drive to expand the business in new areas.
  • The ability to stay calm and make decisions when things get busy (or when the weather turns!)
  • Good people skills - you'll be working with teams, partners and customers regularly
  • Qualifications & knowledge:
  • A Level 4 (or similar) qualification in arboriculture or a related area
  • Knowledge of working safely on highways and relevant regulations
