Full Job Description
We require an ambitious, intellectually rigorous English Teacher to deliver high-quality literature and language instruction across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. The role involves facilitating a challenging, knowledge-rich curriculum that sharpens pupils' textual analysis, critical writing capacity, and oral articulation, preparing them thoroughly for terminal public examinations and lifelong literary engagement.
KEY TASKS & DAILY OPERATIONS
Curriculum Design & Instruction: Plan, resource, and deliver highly structured, evidence-based English lessons that engage and challenge pupils across all academic profiles.
Textual Analysis & Literacy Expansion: Guide pupils through the mechanics of complex prose, poetry, and drama, embedding sophisticated frameworks for analytical essay writing, structural critique, and vocabulary acquisition.
Examination Preparation: Guide Key Stage 4 cohorts systematically through the demands of terminal GCSE English Language and English Literature specifications, maximising progress and attainment outcomes.
Progress Monitoring: Implement rigorous formative marking and summative assessment routines, utilising tracking data to design sharp, targeted interventions that close learning gaps.
Pastoral Responsibilities: Undertake full form tutor duties, managing daily registration, monitoring pupil attendance, and delivering the school's structured personal and social development units.
ENVIRONMENT & STRUCTURE
Academy Framework: Operating within a forward-thinking multi-academy trust, our school combines a robust, data-led approach to student progress with extensive professional development networks, providing collaborative department planning and structured pathways designed to accelerate teacher growth.
Behaviour Systems: The campus implements highly consistent, school-wide behaviour routines that maintain a quiet, respectful, and orderly atmosphere, ensuring classrooms remain calm, predictable, and entirely optimised for rigorous academic study.
Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognised teaching credential, paired with a strong honours degree in English Literature, English Language, or a closely related humanities discipline.
Pedagogical Capability: A proven track record or clear capacity to deliver strong progress metrics in terminal public examinations through explicit, text-first classroom instruction.
Routine Implementation: The ability to execute school behaviour policies with absolute consistency, maintaining a positive, highly focused, and strictly disciplined classroom culture.
Devon Capital & Heritage Hub: Based in the historic cathedral city of Exeter, the school operates within the cultural and economic capital of Devon, combining an exceptional standard of living and proximity to scenic coastlines and Dartmoor National Park with a thriving knowledge economy driven by a world-class university and leading scientific research centres.
Connectivity: The area offers premier South West transit infrastructure, providing seamless travel via the M5 motorway corridor, the A30, and A38, alongside exceptional rail links running smoothly through Exeter St Davids and Exeter Central stations-offering rapid Great Western Railway and South Western Railway services straight to Bristol, Plymouth, and London Paddington or London Waterloo.
