- Support pupils with SEMH needs both inside and outside the classroom
- Build positive, trusting relationships with students
- Assist with the delivery of tailored learning activities and interventions
- Promote emotional regulation and positive behaviour strategies
- Support pupils during lessons, breaktimes, and transitions throughout the school day
- Manage and de-escalate challenging behaviour using positive behaviour support techniques
- Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and wider school staff
- Encourage pupil engagement, independence, confidence, and social development
- Monitor progress and provide feedback to teaching staff
- Help create a safe, structured, and nurturing learning environment
Previous experience working as a SEMH Teaching Assistant is essential - Strong understanding of SEMH needs and the barriers young people may face
- Experience supporting children or young people with additional needs
- Youth work experience would be highly beneficial
- Experience managing challenging behaviour would be advantageous and considered highly transferable
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
- Calm, patient, and resilient approach in challenging situations
- Ability to remain professional, consistent, and supportive at all times
- Strong teamwork skills and willingness to learn
- Genuine passion for supporting vulnerable children and young people
- Commitment to promoting positive outcomes and inclusion Safeguarding Information This role involves regular and direct contact with children and young people within a specialist school environment. The successful SEMH Teaching Assistant will be engaging in regulated activity relevant to children and will be expected to safeguard and promote the welfare of all pupils at all times. The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate a strong understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and maintain professional boundaries in line with school policies and statutory guidance. Appropriate safeguarding checks will be completed prior to appointment, including an enhanced DBS check and any other checks required for working with children.
