Engagement Manager dependent on specialism allocated. Location: Sports Building, Copperas Hill although staff may be asked to work in any location within the University and occasionally at third party venues were sporting programmes take place. Mobility between locations will be subject to the exigencies of the service. This role will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check., The postholder will play a key role in the day-to-day operation of the Sport Building, ensuring a safe, welcoming and efficient environment for all users. Working within a sport, exercise and fitness setting, the role involves supporting facility operations, setting up activity spaces, assisting Reception and Wellbeing & Engagement Coordinators, and providing basic maintenance and cleaning duties in partnership with Campus Support teams. The successful candidate will contribute to the overall operation and development of LJMU facilities, services and programmes. They will work closely with student staff, community leaders, sports clubs and facility users, delivering excellent customer service and helping to create a positive and inclusive environment. In addition to operational responsibilities, the role includes leading and supporting project work and taking ownership of specific areas of interest, providing opportunities for professional development and continuous learning.,
- The role requires supporting the operation of the Sport Building and the wider delivery of sports-based programmes, always providing an excellent level of customer service. To ensure that all equipment is set up in time for the relevant activity in accordance with the current health and safety guidelines and to supervise the collection and returning of sports equipment issued to users of the facility.
- This individual should whilst on duty be aware of all current bookings, equipment requests, maintenance issues and staffing resources available to maintain the dayto-day operation of the building and should be able to facilitate processes to ensure all these elements are maintained throughout their shift.
- Lead on the reporting of all general maintenance issues of all our facilities, to support a variety of uses and users, therefore supporting the safe and proper use of the equipment by our Sport Building users. Ensuring the continued monitoring of outstanding maintenance issues through our Estates Departments reporting tool and ensuring the timeliness of updates, repair or replacement and reaching a satisfactory resolution.
- The role also includes occasional working at Reception dealing with membership & booking enquiries both face to face and over the telephone / internet, the monitoring and checking of facilities and user groups, record keeping, and routine problem solving in the absence or break/cover for our Sports Administration Team.
- The successful candidate will also possess a First Aid Qualification or have the capacity to attain that qualification within three months of engagement. As a trained first aider, deal with accidents or injuries as they occur and ensure that the necessary steps are taken to prevent reoccurrences, and that the relevant documentation is completed. The member of staff will also be a Fire Warden, be trained in Evacuation Chair procedure and expected to lead on any EAP whilst on duty.
- Undertake 'top up' daily cleaning duties daily as required to ensure the facilities are well presented and monitor standards of cleanliness in customer critical areas such as changing rooms, bookable spaces and toilets.
- Ensure the levels of additional bespoke staff, whether through overtime or Unitemps engagement are available whilst you are on duty, ensuring cover is gained for other shifts if an absence is reported whilst you are on duty, so that all scheduled programmes can be undertaken.
- Ensure all those on duty have the correct training and qualifications for the role they are undertaking and direct any updated training needs to the Physical Wellbeing, Senior Administrative Officer. if this is not the case or their relevant qualification is reaching its conclusion. (e.g. Renewal of 1st Aid certificate etc).
- The Duty Officer on shift will have responsibility for the leadership and direction of the working duties of all casual and bespoke instructor and coaches whilst on duty.
- The postholder will work with academic and technical colleagues to ensure complete availability of needs for teaching to be undertaken and consult with JMSU on student union training, fixtures and events and any other third party for event management information and updates. Providing a customer focussed, friendly & welcoming continued improvement outlook to your work.
- Provide content suggestions and support marketing needs of organisation through Marketing Intern and Participation and Healthy Lifestyles colleagues. Using bespoke social media platforms using agreed department parameters to support the promotion of our services.
- The Duty Officer will on a day-to-day basis lead on the reactive customer feedback process responding directly to customers in accordance with our values within agreed timescales, using our administration team to support this process.
- Duty Officer to actively keep up to date on the wider portfolio of JMSU's provision and the academic range of our university to actively assist in recruitment events and general enquiries about LJMU as a front of house member of this University's staff and an ambassador of our brand.
- The Duty Officer in liaison with the Physical Wellbeing Systems, Heath Safety & Compliance Officer will continuously review and monitor the NOPs and EAPs. Ensure scheduled safety Audits are conducted in a timely manner and when necessary, conduct RIDDOR and follow up for incidents and accidents.
- The Duty Officer will consult with other sports building staff members in relation to their programmes whether Participation or Healthy Lifestyles, Gym, Events and IT, SHE & Compliance through the appropriate IT platform(s).
- Each Duty Officer and/or Grade 5 member will be allocated an area(s) of advanced responsibility, on an annual basis through a process of CPD and key performance indicators highlighted annually through their PDPR process. Examples of such but not exhaustive:

- External Facilities link. The postholder will lead on one or more of these areas and deputise for the Head of Sport & Physical Activity in their absence on these key allocated areas of responsibility. These can be changed or reviewed annually or in the case of a Duty Officer leaving the organisation. There will be two staff members with oversight for each area to ensure no single point of failure. You will be able to measure, analysis and determine the impact of our services in your lead area(s) and report when necessary to support the strategic plans of the department.
- The responsibility of access and egress within the sports building in relation to safeguarding, through associated NOP and control of contractors is that of the Duty Officer(s) on shift. Also, the confidentiality of any personnel customer data collected in relation to key service delivery.
- The Duty Officer will actively support any review or improvement implementations, and work associated with continued development, benchmark auditing and impact assessments, through the collation of information and associated metrics.
- Work with LJMU Campus Support - Security Officers in maintaining the security of the Sport Building. To maintain order within the facility, reporting any problems to your immediate line manager or to building security.
- Maintain your own mandatory qualifications, licensing and CPD/training requirements. Always ensure compliance with Health and Safety legislation. To upkeep Normal Operating Procedures, management of risk and Emergency Actions Plans. Values and Regulations

Salary: £26,707 to £31,236 per annum Includes shift allowance of 12.5% Hours: Full time. Working on a 4-week rota 5 in 7 days a week. (including Weekends and Evenings, Shift allowance is paid) Contract Length: Permanent, Financial benefits: Competitive salaries based on a low contractual 35-hour working week. 7.1% employer pension contributions for non-academic staff enrolled in the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS). This is a temporary reduction from the previous rate of 17.5%, effective from April 2026, following the Fund's triennial review. The reduction reflects the Fund's current surplus and improved financial position. This does not affect your pension benefits, which are determined by LGPS scheme rules rather than the level of employer contributions. 28.68% employer contribution to pensions for teaching staff enrolled into the Teachers' Pension Scheme (TPS).
